Default Home made leaders

Folks,

Here is a link to a Question of using Maxima Chameleon leader material. I’ve used the product for well over 30 years. Like others in the link, I switch to supple monofilament about 0.012” (12 lb. test). For hinge and tippet.
Most butt sections last the life of the fly line.

I made some braided leaders with 0/6 thread, nicest turning over leader I ever cast. They were very prone to wind knots though.

Don;
Been using Maxima to build my own leaders since about 1980, working from butt to tip with varying diameters/strengths.
Then replace sections as you work back from changing flies

However....I use the Maxima all the way to the fly when nymphing
For dries, I will usually add on the supple mono at about 4lb or .007 inch.

You are correct...the butt section usually lasts as long as the line itself

The only downfall...picking up poplar fuzz on the knots

Went to furled leaders years ago. Completely limp, no memory, zero stretch, and custom built for weight, length, and taper. Everything from steelhead to 2 weight dry fly. The only time I use mono is for indicator nymphs on rivers.

I have been using Ultragreen Maxima for decades for my leaders.
One fellow mentioned how the line looks under water, perhaps I will try some Chameleon for tippet in the future
