Good Place Around Edm to take out kids

Hi !

I am looking for a good place within around 45-60 min of Edmonton to take the kids out for perch or trout. We walk onto the lake but am looking for something where they have a shot at catching some fish.

Tons of 6" perch at Alberta beach in 6' of water or so, although I haven't fished there in years so things may have changed.

A few years eh? I don’t think you could find 6 ft of water there after a flood.

Cardiff is ok for trout, slow but you’ll probably get something.

Salters is better but be super careful around the aerator.

Nakamun has not recovered as far as I know...maybe never

Interesting comment re the salters aerators. When we were there a few weeks ago we encountered several people drilling holes not more than 20 ft from the edge of the open water created by the main aerator. As well we did see some guys standing very close to the open water edge casting directly into the open water. I do understand that the fish may be attracted to the higher oxygen levels in that area but sure looked dangerous to me. Good spot for kids although we got skunked last time there. Another producing lake is Lower Chain however it is a few hours drive.

Drill holes as you approach the open water. Quite often it’s just as thick 10 feet from the open water as everywhere else. I wouldn’t do it with kids or dogs around though.

I'll defer to you as the local expert. I do know that my kids loved watching them circle the hook until one would take the hook. Lots of action and tons of fun for the kids.

Every year some morons fall in by the Salters aerator. And more than once the aerator has been fouled by fishing line from people casting from ice into open water. At least once the aerator was out of commission so long the lake killed. People need to use their damn brains and fish anywhere else on the lake but there.

Sounds like Wab is the best to catch! Looks like all catch and release there, right? What works out there, small jigs with worms or maggots?

We went to Wab and had a great time got a few fish through the ice and had lots of bites, sightings and fish that got off. Thanks for the recommendations!
