Lightbulb What do to with a big old (domestic) boar

Hi Team,

Dad's got a small farm just inside Edmonton city limits. He's got a big old boar that's probably 350 lbs. It'll be a PITA to load on a trailer and probably won't taste particularly good.

I'm wondering if people would want it for dog food or bear/trapping bait. Thoughts?

Even though he's a boar and fair size, I must disagree on the fact that he may not taste particularly good as you've stated. There's a lot a bacon and ham on that boy. My suggestion would be to butcher him for your own consumption.
If I were closer, I might just consider getting him

I agree with gitrdun. I shot and ate a 375 pound wild boar years ago that I took with my bow. I marinated it also which probably helped. Was really tasty

Put him on Barley/Oat chop for a month.....Then butcher him.

Interesting. Some of the quick research (on the academic side, not the blog side) has suggested there's a very high chance a couple year old intact boar is going to be taint-central. It's a lot of work but maybe just to kill, gut and hang, then try a couple samples. It's the boiling and scraping that I'm not thrilled about if we might end up tossing it.

And less important but still annoying, because he's in city limits we can't use a firearm to kill him.

It would probably make great coyote wolf bait. I’ve tasted old boar when I was a kid at my uncles. Myself, I wouldn’t be eating it.

Skin it and save yourself a boat load of work. I usually run a gut hook along the abdomen and along the spine so I remove the skin in two parts. Works well for me.

I agree. Thin him down a bit.

Boar taint is said to be be genetic. Some lines are not supposed to have any.

I read an article of a guy who was trying to breed a taint free line. He would biopsy a small piece of the back fat to see if it tasted of taint. I never had the urge to sample one of my hogs though.

The only way to get rid of it that I have seen proven was to castrate then feed for a few months. Big boars will bleed lots though. I haven't done this and after looking at how my 800LB boar moves anything in his way I don't think i would want to try. He's a pet now though as he's too big to breed.

I had a boar die once in the winter. Put him out back and in the spring he hadn't been touched by anything, not even the birds. What a mess.

Yup. Cut off the dangling things at the back. Thin him down and then like Possum said pour the chop to him and bring its weight up then into deep freeze.
Would never know it was a boar.

I'll see what Dad wants to do. We'll be butching a younger sow ourselves, so I'll have to learn one day. Anyone ever tried killing a hog without the aid of a gun? Searching Youtube brings up some crazy stuff.

Wouldn't the best way to kill it be using a bow? I'm in the city and would be willing to come with my bow if you would like.

You need to look for a captive bolt gun.

Let him run free and terrorize the surrounding countryside.

Might not be the "right" thing to do but could make for some funny you tube vids.

that would be a loud, long, kill for a city backyard.
unless maybe a heavy bolt to the skull?

He said that it's on a small farm just inside city limits. It's not a 350 lb pig in a residential back yard. A well placed shot with a bow might get a few squeals out before it died but that's it.

I think a 22lr between the eyes from up close wouldn't make enough noise to bother anyone, if you think it might, turn on a radio.

Can someone explain this "taint" on an old boar. Never heard of live meat being tainted. This common with old pigs?

Nothing wrong with that, except for the fact that it is illegal.

I'm guessing if the OP is saying that the pig is too big to breed, that it's more like 700 pounds. Many people misjudge the weight of pigs...

22LR in a pig like that is begging for a trainwreck...

Use a Tikka on him. Their butt pads make the stocks a deadly weapon.

If your having trouble getting rid of it, I would gladly take some of the meat for sausages and bacon. I'll even help butcher if you want the help.

Castrate, wait few months, slaughter, eat.

I used to work on a pig farm in the old world, we 'fixed' them w/o anesthesia.
