As far as I know they are not supposed to be here either. That being said, I've personally seen two around my home near Edson. First one was eating a neighbours dog food so it was "taken care of". About 2 years later another one showed up at the same peoples place. We tried to get him too but it was only there for a few days and then it disappeared.

I was away from home, a couple years ago the wife heard some noises on the deck and looked outside and sure enough...she swears it was a raccoon. I said no way, i didn't think we had any here either. Til this day i often call her crazy coon lady, but i better not tell her of these other stories. Otherwise it's going to be "I TOLD YOU SO"
Oh this was a few clicks out of Slave Lake

Every year just about this time we get the annual rash of raccoon sitings. they've been around for quite some time. Pls., don't let them get a foothold in AB or we'll have a prob., like the rats in Saskabushless, so do whatever you gotta do...

Raccoons have been here quite a long time. I remember seeing one in the NSR valley in Edmonton 40 years ago. The 'Mammals of Alberta' range map for them shows them associated with the major river valleys of the province, mostly on the prairie.

So are they on the varmit list...meaning anybody could just shoot one. Never did pay any attention to it if it was stated in the regs. Like i said i never knew we had them, they must be good at hide and seek.
Long time ago a buddy of mine had one as a pet, he had his hands full, just like having three kids.

Check out page 59 of the 2009 hunting regs. They are listed under Other Animals that "may be hunted, but not trapped (see trapping regs), without a licence throughout the province, at all times of the year."

Racoon in Black Diamond on the sheep river
I work with a guy in Black Diamond and he lives on the river, and told me of and animal eating all of his dog food. So I set a few 220's in his shed thinking that I was going to catch a black and white. To my suprise I caught a couple bandits 20 and 24 pounds in december. I never put any more traps out because he never had the problem again. But in the summer I seen two more that were run over on the road

If any of you shoot or trap another raccoon, I would love to get one for taxidermy purposes. I am willing to pay money. We have yet to see any around Hinton yet.
Please pm me or whatever if you have one you would be willing to get rid of.
Thanks

Its gonna start being a military issues with them right away when we hit the brush a runnin coons lol I talked with a few friends of mine an they had seen some tracks at the sandy an beaver river junction an they looked it up on the computer shows raccoons; they were eating clams judging by the half eaten clams an picked apart crayfish. Time for the hounds on the run, dont need these nasty critters around for sure. I know there is on more here 2 miles from where I got this one just not allowed on that land whatsoever unfortunately. But time to start calling them, If I get one more You can have it MB1. You might have to drive up here or catch me in hunting season when I go up there.

Friend's uncle trapped a raccoon in 1981 on the NSR near Two Hills. Seen them at night in Lethbridge 20 years ago. Not uncommon to find them as road kill down in the Milk River country.
I heard some hound hunters wanted to be able to run them at night. F&W turned that proposal down. No night hunting, even for raccoons.

I saw a dead one on the road at the Bow down here, and see their tracks along the river everytime I go there.

I was helping my buddy with harvest a few years ago, at Marwayne (15 miles North, 12 west of Lloydminster) and in the middle of the night I could see this spotlight flying through the field, he must have been taking 15 foot steps. I stopped the combine, and Steve came walking up with this little snarling, screaming, ignorant ball of fur and teeth. He had been seperated from his mother, there were 5-6 little ones and the momma. Not a happy little coon.
Funniest damned thing I ever saw.
Friends of ours had an orphaned baby racoon, just 7 miles from here. He was an absolute riot, bottle fed, friendly as a kitten. If you called him by name, he would come out of wherever he was, climb your leg, your shirt, sit on your shoulder and 'paw' at your face.
I broke her heart when I informed her that racoon scat carried bacteria that is very harmful to humans, even more so when I told her that coons could not be kept as pets.
His name is Kelso, and has appeared in several movies.
