Default Predator hunting?

Has anyone been killing any cats or wolves?

We spent the whole Christmas break looking for wolves in that nasty cold weather. Only once did we have the wolves pinned down in a small area and moved in as close as we could from two directions. After trying every trick in the book to get them to show themselves. My son who was two km's away from me finally had a black one show himself. He made a 430 heard shot and put him down. He doesn't like posting any pictures, so I can't, sorry. We had two bait piles out and checked them almost every morning, but we had the worst luck. The only two times they hit the bait, it was on the very few days we were not there. There were wolf tracks everywhere we went, and with the cold weather, we were hopeful for some good hunting, but not this year. I broke in my new Ski-doo expedition 900 turbo and made a lot of miles and saw some new country so not all was lost. Next year we will be back at it. We've managed at least one wolf, four out of the last five years, so still good success considering how hard it is to catchup to them.

Barry, what general area /wmu's were you hunting those wolves. Not seeing much sign north of Edson this year on Trapline.

Think the actual confirmed number is 11. Been a solid season so far.

We were hunting WMU 511 and 516. got the wolf in 511, but there were tracks even in the caribou ranges where they are trying to control the wolf numbers.

WMU 514. Lots of wolves.
WMU 501, you'll see them. Tracks on the river. Tracks on the leases, towards the border.
WMU 500, there's sign on the west side of the settlement, especially around the lakes.

Ohhh definitely had some people looking at it in the back of my truck on the henday lol
I think I got 3 thumbs up, two middle fingers, and about 6 cars that were speeding past me then slowed down and drove right beside me lol

That's a solid ratio. Especially for the big city.

Can't speak for Jeff/1911, but I shoot every one I see. Wolves, Coyotes, Cougar, Bears. Their populations are all a huge problem in my areas. I would much rather see a few Cows/Does and fawns than a coyote.

I went for a 50km quad ride more than a hunt last September up here north of Fort McMurray. It’s a tough ride through a lot of Muskeg but there are high spots that were winter logged several years ago and a guy can do a big loop so on a light machine like mine it’s a good spot to get away from people. In total I saw 13 bears and a pack of wolves. There was pretty much a bear in every cut block. Not a deer or moose track to be found all day. Coincidence? I don’t think so….

It was beautiful country that should have held some animals but unless the predators get knocked down it will be void of very many Ungulates. So I can understand your train of thought.

Yessir, spoken like someone's who's actually been out hunting!

Wolves on crown land open 365days.
Thought only if there is an open big game season? Did I miss something?

I attached the quote from the Regs. Pretty broad area for 365 day a year wolf hunting on Crown lands that you have permission to hunt wolves. Page 32 of the 2021 Regs.
