Default How many is too many when it comes to barrels?

I have a Ruger M77 Mark 1 in 270 Win. that I have owned since new. In general terms, how many rounds (handloads, loaded near max but not "hot") can be put through a rifle barrel before it is reaches the end of it's usable life? Can the barrel be checked for wear and, if so, how? Price wise, what is the cost of a new barrel?

Thanks
JDP

I would think as a hunter who spends a little time at the rge, ya know, the avg guy, you will never shoot out a barrel in a lifetime. If your a heavy target shooter, and loading, i suppose. I wouldnt think much of it until she started showing problems. But with the reloading aspect im not sure of tolerances and all. Im sure more than afew guys will have some answers though. Ya i dont know.

keep a strain on er.

Depends:
On the rate at which you fired them through the barrel, how long the throat is or is'nt, what type of imperfections exist in the barrel steel, whether you ever nicked the leade with a bore brush or cleaning jag.
Only way to tell for sure is a borescope inspection, and still that tells you nothing. My wifes 270 has the first 6 to 8" of barrel that looks like fire charred tree bark, yet it still shoots like a hot damn.
I guess what needs to be asked is what led you to beleive your barrel is shot out?
I'll give you my pat replies in advance.
Have you cleaned it with a good copper solvent?(green or blue patches)
Have you checked all scope mounting hardware as tight.
Have you checked the stock for abnormal contact with the barrel. (is it bedded)
Could your optics have gone bad?

When a barreel goes sour, normallly the groups open up randommly..

An equipment problem , ie. loose screws , brass, etc willl not.
That means that you will have clusters of two or three bullets and flyers.

if it is the rifle and it is still stilll printing under 2" at 100 yards, quit shooting it at targets and shoot it at animals only.
They won't complain any louder if you hit them
in the 7 ring instead of the X!!
