Default Burnt Out 25-06

Fellers, my heavy metal war machine is on its last legs. I have a Ruger No.1 in 25-06 and she has washed out. Haven't bore scoped it yet but I know that I am probably going to find a burnt throat. This gun used to shoot inside MOA all day long and would sometimes go down to .5 MOA on a good day.

I am seeking your advice. Should I rebarrel it? Or have it bored out to some other calibre? Sell it?

What would you guys do? I have other guns but this one is special to me and I would love to keep it if possible. What would you recommend, and who would you recommend to do the work?

Bore scope her Fergy.
The Mrs's 270 looks like 10 miles of bad oil patch road but still shoots like a house on fire, so a burnt throat is un likely your worst enemy.
I'd suspect the crown first, then look at bedding and or pressure points some where, the last stop being the chamber.
Without first doing a thourough examination first hand you may be throwing good money after bad.
PS: ever bed that pig?
Set up an appointment with Bushrat, he's the man with the borescope round here.

Did the accuracy go all of a sudden like, or gradually?
Throat wear doesn't happen all at once.
if it did, like Dick says, I'd look elsewhere first.
the VERY first thing I always look for is my own shooting form, benched or not.
Big things can happen on a 100 your target if your positioning or your trigger finger, follow through, Automatic alignment, etc is not correct.
I usually check this by shooting another rifle and paying very close attention to my shooting form.
If it is the throat, depending on how thick a shank you have, rechambering may not be an option, then it is a rebarrel.

Don't be afraid to throw that barrel away either, they don't last forever but do wear out.
Stick another on and give'er bullets!

Saw on another thread that you say about 20lbs. of powder?
if you were loading 42 grains, that would ring in around 3,000rounds.
Very possible with the 25/06 to was out a throat that fast, yup.

Is you No.1 a factory varmint weight barrel?
If so, I'd look at getting a rebarrel done, I doubt if the Ruger has the contour top cut offf that much shank....

If its the throat, it doesn't go quickly. As it 'wears' just move you bullets out a little more> Very easy in a SS as you don't even have to worry about mag length. I just start with a quarter turn on the seating die.

Throat is 'gone' when bullets are are to far to stay in the cases.

Hmpfff.

The thing still shoots well within minute of white tail; but I note that the velocities have fallen off too. I have checked the scope mounts and all that stuff; I suspected the rifle of this a year or two back and basically parked it. But it drives me nuts to have the rifle go south like that...

Dick, you putrid turd! How DARE you offend me by offering advice to the great Ferguson Rifleman? That's the peasants for you, they are always trying to be better than they are! Mind your place or be put in it!

How is the Mrs. these days? Still shooting like a house a-fire? How is the little fella shooting with that 7-08 of his? I am not happy with him either BTW, I am very disappointed in his ability to gob, curse and fight! My offer still stands- I will be happy to tutor him in the manly arts free of charge. It would be a shame to see him grow up to be the same brandy sipping tosspot that his father is! I have some fine Churchill cigars here that have the lad's name all over them... When are you two heading out to the range next?

Fergy, Dick speaks the truth. inspect, evaluate, and then decide.
Bushrat is your go to guy, he has the borescope, and is willing to use it.

It's starting to sound a little too complicated Ferg..just sell it to me ...I'll keep good care of it
Really though..... If you have addressed all the issues that Cat and Dick have referred too...pick a caliber and pop a new bbl on it. If you need more than minute of WT, COL is'nt fixing the problem....your velocities are dropping, .....suck er up, bbl er up and shoot er UP !!
IMHO
Possible choices, Ron Smith, Dave Henry, Bits of Pieces in BC.

And don't forget Corlane, Paul Peibin, Bill Leeper, Dennis Sorenson, and Pud at Bashaw Sports!
Most of these guys will use barrels of your choice, and some stock Ron's barrels.

Now there's a lot of choice !!
One more thing I thought of..and it may sound ....strange. but after 42 lbs of powder/3000 + rounds...how clean is the bbl??
Have you given it a really good soaking with your favorite brand of copper cutter, followed by whatever brand of nitro solvent burns yours nose??

Just a question, might save a bbl from the scrap bin
