scope for 338-06
My Cooper Jackson Hunter, 338-06 sporting a 22" barrel, should be back to me shortly after a “rebirth” (formerly a 7mm Rem Mag). Never owned a 338-06 before but my intention for it will be my moose, elk and/or bush gun.
Need a scope for it!
Looking at Swarovski Z5 2.4-12x50 also thinking of a 1-5x24 or similar but never owned one, not sure how they will be gathering light in the bush? I currently own a Leupold VX6 2-12x42 that could be good but I could use it on another rifle also. Any other suggestions?

Curious how they solved the bolt face issue - did they replace the bolt altogether?

This is just my opinion, but the 338-06 is not a real long distance cartridge, so I think any standard 3-9x40 scope would be fine. I have a Leupold VX-2, 3-9x40 on mine, and it works great. The scope does have the LR duplex, because that is what I had on hand. My rifle really likes the 210 Nosler Partition or the 200 Accubond, on top of Ramshot Big Game. Cheers.

That VX6 is about a good a match for that rifle as any. I would look no further.

Yep! Changed everything. Basically a new rifle with resisting stock and action (I believe)

Congrats on the 338-06 build.
I have a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40 in gunmetal grey mounted on my Sako m75 Greyolf 338-06AI.
The Leupold VX2 4-12x40AO with LRD duplex would be good scope. Your VX6 scope would be good to use as well. I don't think you need anything stronger unless you want to.
I built my rifle to shoot 225gr bullets (Accubonds and TTSX shoot great). I use H414 powder with Federal 210 primers using Norma 338-06AS head-stamped brass.
A 185gr TTSX bullet would be sweet for the 338-06. I would use them in mine but I love my 300WM with 180gr Accubonds performance so I when with heavier bullet choice in my build.
Have fun with the new rifle

I ran a vxIII 2.5-8 on mine, and thought it worked well - never should have sold it, but at least it went to a good home....

Seeing as you mention 'bush' gun, I'd want the lower end at around 2x ish.
Mine has a vx3 in 2.5-8x and it's great.
Currently shooting 210 nosler partitions in tiny little groups. The 210 ttsx is also very accurate. Picked up some 225 accubonds but haven't developed a load for them yet.

These scopes just flat out work on everything, only small downside is they can be a bit tricky to mount on some long actions.
VX2 3-9 would be good too, so would a fixed 4 or maybe 6. I wouldn't go to anything with parallax adjustments or turrets on a 338-06.

I bought a Leupold VX-R just to try the Firedot. It great for hunting the bush
and low light . The illuminated firedot is adjustable for brilliance and works really well. Turn it off if you don't need it. Great 'scopes IMO.

Thanks. I was looking at the z6 1.7-10x42 with the BRH reticle too. Could be the perfect scope for me. I’m a big fan of feild of view.

Haha. I'm glad to hear that. It is now wearing a zeiss in 3.5-10. It fits the cartridge quite well.

Keep it simple and use a VX-3 2.5-8.
Will be perfect for up close and longer shots at the same time being light and compact.

I've got a 1-4x VXII, its plenty bright enough in the bush, right up to the last legal minuet.
Personally I would go with either something 1-5ish, or 2-7ish on a rifle such as yours. As a dedicated timber hunter I feel that a 3-9x scope is noticeably inferior to either of those choices on a bush rifle, and to my taste the scope should be a basic affair, with a simple duplex reticle and no turrets. Obviously just my opinion, but its been formed while wandering hundreds of kilometers of game trails with rifle in hand.
A 3-9, or better, scope is like a .300 mag... if its what you have you can make it work in the bush. But when you're putting together a bush oriented rifle, you may as well put a bush oriented scope on it, since IMO the scope can pretty much make or break a rifles usefulness in the bush more than just about any other feature.

For now, l'm going to put my Leupold vx6 2-12 on it. Wide duplex no turrets (but could get my cds dial for a load). I can keep it on 2x in the bush, 12x when developing loads. Best of all I already own it. It's not overly heavy either.
Thanks guys.

338/06
I run a Nightforce 2.5-12x42mm on my 338/06. These rifles are totally capable of longer distance shooting. The 338 cal Bullets carry energy very well with their high BC’s compared to .35 cal. I currently shoot the 210 ttsx with varget but am seriously considering going down to the 185 ttsx to increase the velocity from 2700 to hopefully around 2800 plus.
I absolutely love my rifle, I run Norma brass and have some extra if anyone is looking. Only taken a WT at 40 yards on the run and two coyotes with one shot at 180 yards. Gotta love the ttsx pass through!!

Beauty. !
Looks like the 210 ttsx is a winner. Just need to figure out the specified loading.
210 sounds right in the wheel house for the 338-06 up to 225 grain and still a decent trajectory.’
I’ve got a 338 RCM still running factory loads and collecting brass. My hopefully accurate load will be pushing 210 partitions or Accubonds.

That’s a gorgeous rifle and I’m very jealous! I’ve been looking at re barrelling one of my pumps to a 338-06 or .338 federal. I plan on putting on a Leupold vx 1-5x24. I have one on my .243 pump and it works great in the bush or as a close quarters deer rifle.
