Default Shotgun Thoughts

Looking at picking up my first shotgun. Primary uses will be (in this order):

*Bear defense / Camp defense
*Upland game birds
*Clays/Targets/Fun

I'm leaning towards the Winchester SXP Camp/Field 3" Pump Combo in 20 gauge.

Will I be happy with this one or should I keep looking? Am I asking for too much out of one shotgun here?

Nothing wrong with the 20g. I’d go to the stores and shoulder them. Let the shotgun pick you, not the otherwY around.

Sxp sometimes don’t like low brass, I had a jam once, just brutal also, where you load the shell in the tube I’ve dang near ripped my thumb nail off on more than one occasion. I found shoUldering the sxp awkward in comparison to the 870. The 870 is bullet proof, the most available accessories. There is over 10 million out there, they are like the ar of the pump shotgun world. There’s a reason law enforcement and military use them, cause they’re good! If I was you I’d go with a 3” wingmaster 12 gauge lots of used ones out there, go to the cgn equipment exchange fir shotguns type in “870”. Youcould get an 18” or shorter barrel in the shotgun parts section to swap out when shooting clays or birds. I don’t know if I’d be sold on the 20 gauge for b3ars unless it was a rifled barrel with sabots, but definitely would steer clear of the sxp do to the reliability issues I mentioned above. Hope that helps.

Are the shells more expensive then 12 gauge....those little 410 are made of gold according to price.....

20 gauge typically cost about the same as 12 gauge, but the 12 gauge go on sale much more often, so if you wait for sales, you can buy them for less. As for 410, and the 16 and 28 gauges, if you shoot them a lot for clays, you can load them for about half the cost as factory target loads. Premium upland loads cost about the same, regardless of the gauge.

Consider the browning BPS as well. Clay at prophet river had them on for a ridiculous low price several years back, so I bought one on a whim...20" barrel, or 24"? Can't remember, synthetic black and extended mag. What a great gun. I've even had it out at the sporting clays during a rainstorm, and won a round. Smooth action and fast pointing. Mine is a 12g, you could get a 20g...but 12 g works.

I'd recommend 12 ga.
Just to make your life easier.
And I'm a fan of the Remington 870.
But if you're looking for a deal on a combo, get a Maverick 88. People who have never owned one will tell you how terrible they are, but the people who own them never have issues. I bought a short barrelled 88 for bears years ago, and recently bought a longer railed barrel for it. Now it comes along to the trap club as a spare. And it's blued finish is much nicer than an 870 express matte finish.
