Default Coyote and Pronghorn Caliber?

Hey guys,
I am interested in picking up a new rifle. I currently have a .300Winmag which I use for deer/elk/moose etc. but I would like to find a good caliber for both Coyote and Pronghorn (assuming I ever get drawn).
I would like something which shoots flat, with enough punch for those long windy shots at pronghorn on the prairie, and at the same time, not going to absolutely destroy the speedgoat or a coyote at close range.
Any suggestions?
Something that the old lady could shoot without fear of big recoil would be nice too (she is 5 foot, 110 pounds).
Is the 7mm-08 or .270 a good choice? or is it a bit too big for what im looking for.

Thanks

hmm..
after reading the .243 vs 25-06 thread may be i should be considering something in the .243-6mmrem-25-06 range? 7mm-08 and 270 are a big larger than what i am after?

The 243 is an excellent dual purpose cartridge. You can load 85Gr Gamekings or TSX's to about 3300Fps which makes VERY dead deer and coyotes with minimal recoil.

Other options are the 6.5mm's ( 6.5X55 or 260 Rem)

Not sure how tough your old lady is? If she is anything like mine, she will appreciate a cartridge 25-06 or smaller.

I'm going to have a 260 built for my antelope gun. Have the donor but still trying to decide on all the other details.

24 or 2'6'' barrel ?...humm..

Going to be built on a Ruger #1 so I dont think a 26'' barrel will be excessively long.

Still trying to decide.

Methinks you're gonna get a few interesting comments. But I'd personally go with a 25-06.

25-06 if you don't reload, 257 Roy if you do, something about the 25 cal it just knocks things down.

Ballistics on a typical 130gr bullet from a .270 at a 1000 yards show a bullet drop of almost 30 feet with retained energy of only 375 ft/lbs. Do you really expect us to believe that you made that head shot??? Lobbed one in aiming 355 inches above a 10 inch target with no wind drift for the clean kill??? Maybe you meant 100 yards...

.257 Weatherby. Low recoil and you can push a 80 grain bullet well over 3700ft/sec for coyotes or 100 grain x bullet at 3580 ft/sec for pronghorn. Makes the 25-06 look like its standing still. Just bought that caliber for pronghorn.

I was thinking the same thing.
(actually I was thinking "Type-o or Bullsheet")

A bunch of years ago some fellows were thinking, wouldn't it be nice if there was a cartridge that a fellow could use for varmints (wood chucks, fox, coyote and bob cat) and also use the same rifle for his once a year deer or pronghorn hunting?

Remington came up with the .244 which later was renamed the 6mm.

Winchester came up with the .243.

I would rather have a smaller caliber for coyotes and a larger caliber for pronghorn but the .243 or 6mm will work.

.243,6mm,260,7mm-08,6.5x55,257roberts,7.62X45,7.62x39,7x57...these would all do the trick.... some are good... some are better... but loaded right every one of these rounds would do the job...if your fur hunting choose the smaller/milder calibers... if not shot them all.

My son (Whitetail Junkie) studied our Nosler Reloading manual for I don't know how long to find the perfect cartridge for the coyote and deer combination. The 240 Weatherby offered everything and then some. Many loads in the manual travelling over 4,000 FPS with a 55 grain bullet, and many loads for the 100 grain bullet pushing over 3,200 FPS. It's a light recoil cartridge for what you are looking for, however; the only downfall is the cost of the firearm and the ammo, if you don't reload.
My son just ordered the gun from Clay at Prophet River Firearms in the Mark V Euromark. It's the ultimate! Bon Chance!

I concur, .243 or .25-06. If you want to exotic go for a .250AI or .257AI.

Sure hope you're reloading cause for $90+ a box for factory ammo, I sure wouldnt shoot at coyotes for $4.50 a shot.

You sure? Our >.23 rule isn't universal. There are places you can go smaller than .243 on deer legally.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a .243, after looking around a lot trying to decide what to get thats what I think I've finally set upon. Mainly for coyotes but the 243 will give me access to use it as a deer rifle too.

Of course my mind may change 10 more times before I buy.

Mild recoil, flat & more than enough oomph for antelope. Used it successfully for years on mule deer and whitetail.
