Default Upland Hunting some wide open spaces

Im from Northern Alberta and am trying to plan a hunt down south to hunt for some upland Birds with my new dog, Im not sure what the best approch is or where to go, to go with the farm style hunt or head down and start knocking on farmers doors, what should a guy do. We hunt grouse but its heavy cover or ditchs along roads. almost all ground shooting which is a blast to but Id like to try flushing and wing shooting some pheasnts.

Default the pheasant option

the Brooks area is renowned for our pheasants although the wild population is always a hit and miss pending on the wintering conditions. The Eastern Irrigation District (EID) does permit hunting as long as you obey signs and stay on the trails. Incidently, the EID is the largest PRIVATE landowner left in north america.
Access to rural honey-holes is quite often subject to landowner discretion, as the EID gets hit pretty hard during the four week season. there are put and take sights, eg: buck for wildlife, and the local pheasant festival committee sights that get regular birds planted and these can be extremely productive later in the season. The partridge numbers have been very good the last few years as have the sharptail grouse.

Northeastern Montana is an upland hunter's dream. Very easy access, dirt cheap accomodations and plenty of birds. Go get yourself a Sage Grouse before they get put on the Endangered list... You can hunt pen-raised roosters in AB anytime.

I was in the situation you were in for Southern Alberta. Best thing to do is buy the M.D. maps with landowner names for your areas of interest. All you need to know is in those maps..just add phone calls!!! Funny how the crappiest one...which is for the brooks area..happens to be the most expensive!!!
