Westjet - the downfall
I foresee an Air Canada 2.0.
Gregg Saretsky saw the writing on the wall with the push for unionization.

"One sticking point in negotiations is whether pilots for WestJet's new discount airline Swoop, will be part of the union or not. Swoop begins flying on June 20 and is designed to be an ultra low-cost carrier. WestJet has been looking outside of Canada for Swoop pilots."
When they are successful hiring outside Canada for Swoop they will be replacing the rest of the pilots with TFW's.

Of course, if employees didn't feel screwed....no need for unionization.

If the employees felt screwed, they could go get a job elsewhere.
But instead they decided to extort the people that had been putting food on their table.

Yes or they could negotiate a better deal, not everyone chooses to turn tail.

Lol. Is that what this is called? Negotiating? How about we call it what it is. Holding the people who pay their wage hostage. The WestJet clients.

Saretsky was the prime reason several employee groups decided to unionize.

Westjet was good, no actually great. But like any corporation it became bloated by chasing the almighty dollar. That eventually squeezed the employees and they formed their own protection. They did it because westjet forgot they mattered. And the fact that they are looking to hire tfws to fly their planes is ok with you?

That has to be the most formal picket line in history the pilots are wearing their suits.
There's always two sides in negotiations the media has always portrayed the workers as the bad side the gullible sheeple eat it up. Both sides would benefit if a settlement can be reached before a walkout.

I believe it partially has to do with the union. I may be wrong.

Sold the WestJet Stock as it has only one road to go now and that's downhill from here.

The airline industry is very competitive and margins are tight. If WestJet can’t pay its pilots the same as their competition, they should stay out of that market. Sounds like WJ wants to undercut prices on the backs of their employees ... that being their strategy to grab a share of the market. If operating too close to the margin results in financial trouble and bankruptcy ... no one wins. EDIT: They should thank the union

Actually .....yes
Most of the very substandard employees that many have dealt with on Air Canada would have been out of a job if not for a being in a union. Now they remain working and poison the work enviroment for others. I'm afraid, Westjet is now following the same path as Air Canada but won't likely be repeatedly bailed out by Ottawa and so will probably end up a foot note in history.

I have several friends that work for WJ and they have had things stripped away from their contracts for that last few years.
For example, Flight attendants (FA) have a much higher likelyhood of getting sick on the job, the industry has these stats, WJ removed most of the FAs sick days to 25% of what they were and is the industry standard. THis move has impacted their work force negatively but more importantly as a customer you have sick FAs spreading germs through the tin can.
WJ FAs now don't get paid until the plane lifts off... it used to be when you arrived on shift.. the difference is 1.5 - 2 hours per day that they must be in uniform, in position in their workplace, working without compensation.
The reasoning; WJ had to many instances where the planes were on tarmac for extended periods, so they pulled that time from FAs. If a plane has a mechanical and the plane is grounded for hours, those FAs don't get paid even though the still have to serve WJs customers.
WJ has really done some greasy things for the $$$ off the backs of their work force.
None of my friends wanted to unionise but felt it was their only option

Unions can be either bad or good depending on the way the workers and management work together. They can protect good workers from bad management or they can protect bad workers from being fired.

I actually just flew to New Brunswick and back on Air Canada. While I don't fly with them all the time, it was great service - check-in, gate staff, flight attendants, and air crew.

Usually it is the greasy companies that get unionized....takes a ton of balls to form a union and negotiate a first deal. Tell all your co workers you want to collect dues from them and try a legal proceeding with your employer who pays your wages and probably wants zip nothing nada to do with having a union work force. Tell them that and also remind them the raises are pretty much in line with non union and the pay is roughly the same.
There is no benefit to being union other than a thin layer/buffer zone between management and employees. Depending on the company you may want one, haha

^This. I saw the original CEO/Founder speak at a business event around five years ago, luncheon type thing. He did not have nice things to say about the direction of Westjet after he left and he basically said the same thing as above.
