Default Tripod suggestions for foothills and mountain hunting?

I need to upgrade my tripod. Currently using the Vortex High Country. $200 from Cabelas a few years back and it's pretty low on the quality spectrum. So life is too short to put quality optics on a tripod that you have to constantly fumble around with. Makes for a bad time!

I'm wondering where people stand on the sturdiness vs pack weight question.
Are carbon fiber vs aluminum legs worth it?

Also, what about heads? I was checking out the Outdoorsmans website from AZ. Wow, you can drop some serious coin just on the heads. Does anyone have pointers on what to look for as far as head features go?
So far, I just know where my current tripod lets me down and thats mostly due to lack of smoothness when changing head position. Also the centre post on mine comes loose when you pan side to side.

I'm thinking about looking a camera tripods not branded or made by hunting optics companies, like Manfrotto. Any suggestions?

I'll be scouting new country this summer and need to get this issue solved!

Those are nice but very $$. Not sure you need that quality for a spotter. Good for photography since any slight vibration is detrimental. Use to have one and their ball head when I was doing photography, the one bob sells is plenty good enough for hunting conditions.

I did a bunch of research on this last year, and ended up with a Field Optics Research tripod.
http://www.fieldopticsresearch.com/s...-x49408691.htm

Few reasons I went this way.
1.) the weight capability of this thing. Able to shoot off the tripod.
2.) how light this thing is.
3.)how compact it is
4.) the ability to use two legs as trekking poles. saves weight and buying good trekking poles for the hikes in.
5.) all comes and fits nicely in the carry bag.

I have since replaced the pan head with a gimble head, and that was more for the smoothness of the gimble head when using optics, and just better overall controls on locking things down when shooting the rifles from it.

You could always just get the basic FT-6229 model and buy a used pan head or ball head.

Nightforce I believe makes one similar with the trekking poles.
