Default Owl Attack!

So I'm sitting in the house making plans for my mothers funeral when I hear world war three erupt on my front deck. I look through the screen door and 5 feet away from me 6 or 7 Magpies and 3 Crows are in an absoulte frenzy. What a racket!!! Looking closer I see a very small animal backed against the wall that they were attacking. I thought it was a young squirrel. I open screen door and magpies and crows scatter. I look closer and discover it is a very small Owl and it is giving me a "want some of this?" stare. Couldn't believe this little guy was not torn to shreds. I picked him up, and damn if he didn't sink his little talons into my finger, and started clicking his itty bitty beak like a Grizzley popping his jaws. Talk about fearless.
I have in a large cage at the moment to recuperate for a bit. Contacted Strathcona Raptor Rescue to get some advise on best way to release him, and if they want to tag him first. Doesn't appear to have mom or dad around as the crows and magpies would let me know. Tell you one thing, if looks could kill I'd be a dead man. Bravest little bird I've ever seen. Pretty neat experiance. Brightened my day a bit. Pretty certain it is a Boreal Owl.
DARN.... will try to post pics from my phone.

It's so cute! I hope he is healthy and didn't get too much in trouble with crows.

Very cool story. Agreed, that is an adult, and may well have a mate on a nest that needs feeding. Best to just let him/her go if it can fly.

One could almost be forgiven for wondering if the little fighter was a message from your Mother! As you can tell by my name I am an owl lover, and feel this is a truly wonderful experience for you. I'm jealous.

Definitely. I've never seen one being bothered by big birds -- but the chickadees, kinglets, and nuthatches can be merciless on them. Had it maybe collided with a window? They usually roost in pretty thick cover. There won't be mom or dad -- this is an adult owl.

Don't like the sound of that. Makes me think that little ones are looking for mom.
Haven't heard back from the raptor people, and this little fighter seems ready for action again, so I'll release quickly. I'll try to video the release.

It might be wise to release it around sunset, after the Crows and Magpies have gone to roost.

These sawhet owls are one of the coolest, unique to find them during the day. We ban them in the fall with beaverhill conservatory, might be worth contacting them, as they have first hand experience with these little gems. if they ever go hard like that , just tip them upside down for 10 secs, they cool right down and should be good, cant say I have had the raptor experience with these little guys. cool day
