Long range target/coyote gun
So here is my dilemma, I love my 22-250 for shooting coyotes but would like to be able to touch them out to 800-1000 yards. Would like something that is cheap to reload for that I can punch paper with or whack yotes. The other problem is it's got to be left handed. What are your guys thoughts?

My choices would be in this order
.260rem
7mm-08
.308
6.5-284 ( this would be my first but you said keep reload costs down )
25-06 would be worth a look too but lack of high bc bullets would be the downside

1-8 twist 223
shoots heavy pills. Have some friends that got tired of 1000 meter 308 and wanted something with light recoil. 80-90 grain 223 bullets reach out there with practice, the right optics and a good ballistic program/system.
Tikka was still making southpaw rifles the last time I checked and I believe they make a factory 8 twist

A 22/250 has won regularly in the past in Fclass nationals.
Get a barrel in a fast twist and stick it on your rifle.
With a good range finder and scope you will have a riot!

If it were me and I was left handed. I would buy a savage 12 in 243 for around $800 and drop a grand on a scope and another $200 on mounting hardware. Then with some good handloads a Harris bipod and good rangefinder your off.

Cat what kind of load are guys using in F class in a 22-250. I just find if there is any wind at all it really plays havoc with a 50 gr. Vmax out of my T3.

I think an X bolt might be going in the wrong direction, haven't seen many that will shoot like my Tikka.

Good call, here is my T3 in sno camo dip from APA Archery, gonna touch the scope up now with some white and gray paint . Only problem I see with using the 22-250 or other light calibers at extended ranges is your gonna run out of steam with the small bullets .

Problem with 22 cal bullets and long range is the "meplat" size in relation to bullet diameter. A meplat of .062" is 36% of the 22 caliber bullets full frontal diameter. If you apply a meplat of 36% to a 308 caliber bullet it would measure 0.110", however a 308 bullet can easily be made with a 0.062" meplat. It is impossible to match the ballistics of 6.5, 277, 284, and 308 with anything in 224. The people that make 224 caliber bullets work at long range put a lot more effort into it than someone shooting any of the bigger calibers. A left hand Tikka in a 6.5 X 55 SE with a 1:8 twist spout would be the best bet for a factory long range rifle.

Not sure of the powder charges ( ( have them downstairs ) but I do know the guys use 80 grains and up.
DaleJ mentioned it being easier to shoot a larger calibre at that distance, and he's right , but one CAN shoot the 22's out there and be successful at itif one wants to.
Either way, large or small, it's going to be fun and it's NOT cheap!!

Another option is the 6 Dasher ,1-8 twist and throated for 107 match kings.I have it on good authority that it will kill coyotes and wolves waaaaaay out there!!

To shoot 80 gr out of a 22-250 what twist do you need to stabilize that heavy a bullet?

Not much support for a 25-06, is that just because a lack of bullet choices?

I chose a 260rem for my primary coyote rifle, because I prefer the higher B.C. bullets when shooting in windy conditions. It also offers much longer barrel life than a 22-250, if you intend to use it for target shooting.

I have a 9 twist savage LRPV in 22-250. It will stabilise a 75gr berger vld or the 75gr amax. Either bullet will get you out to 1000 and more, if you were going to be doing F-class I would likely look at something else, but for informal target / coyote use it will work. There is plenty of components available, and it is fairly easy to load for.

I have a Savage with a Shilen select 22-250 1:7" twist I bought a few years ago. Haven't shot it yet, but this is what I bought it for. Should stabilize the 90gr bullets, but I plan on shooting the 75gr Amax. The 75gr Amax shoots wonderful in my 223 AI 1:9".

308 ,borring cause everyones got one,but gets the job done(why everyone has one), remington makes a whole bunch of tactical type 700s over the years usually in this calibre and 223, just get one of them and a trigger job at least ,should be good to go.
or invest into something with the slicker bullets like others have mentioned- 260,708 both spun from the 308.
6.5x 47 lapua would be a deadly calibre to own
just check out gunnuts for something varmint/target style rifle thats suitable for you , used for sale...or here . then practise.
an sps varmint in left handed/308 might be good for you. i have one in 204 (not left though-only calibre they dont make it in),and its super accurate.
i think tikka makes a whole bunch left handed thoughtoo

probably cause not very high BC bullets. comparitevely
dale j on here from chingahga bullets would be able to help i think in this regards. dont quote me , but you can find out.
25-06 with some .5 bc bullets (if there out there) would be another deadly combination but might as well just get a 30-06, or a 6.5-06 would be the best.

Well I've made my decision on what I'm going to buy for a long range target coyote gun. I'm going to buy a Tikka T3 Varmint stainless left hand and put a 26" 6.5 -284 stainless barrel on it.. Next is optics. Would like a Nightforce but I really like the idea of turrets with the yardage on them like the Leupold CDS or the Huskemaw.

my older son has one of these Savages in 308.
It usually shoots one ragged hole at 100 meters with a 175 Match King pushed to 2700+ with Rel 17,
I've seen it put three in an inch at 300 and he's shot it on a 12" x 18" gong out to 875 yards at the farm.
I think it will handle any coyote chores that need doing.
