I think u may be looking at the wrong lense. It would be very hard to find a Cannon made 100-300 detachable lense for any where near 150 bucks unless it is a once in a lifetime clear out.

One other thought, lens is important but so are the camera settings. If you want to get pictures that show great detail when you blow them up limit you film speed to 200 and adjust shutter speed and aperture to compensate. The slower the shutter speed the more movement by you our the subject will blur the picture. So hold the camera dead steady or use a tripod.

Hi Strix; I am looking for a higher power zoom lens, not a camera. Good suggestion on the support, I bought a tripod, but have to set it up.

Hi Dean, taking pictures is new to me, but I live on a lake we have Pelicans and all kinds of activity and after seeing everyone's beautiful pictures I am motivated to try.

After Bushmaster recommended to move up to a 300 over my 200 I did an online search and they are on sale at Visions right now, but I am not sure I will pull the pin on this one because I way want something more powerful, like at 50 yards a duck will fill the frame and every feather and water droplet will be defined.

I have lots to learn about film speed, but mine is a digital camera without film and an SD card. The camera is older but I think good enough with the proper lens. Our lake is covered by ice as of this morning so I have time to do a lot of research and hope to post some spectacular waterfowl pictures next spring. I am heading out hunting this week, so I may get some nice closeups to share soon.

After seeing Farmer's moose picture, I am going to see if my wife is awake

Hey North40Rules.

I used to have the Canon 70-300 which is a few levels higher than the one you are looking at and even that one was very soft once used over 200mm. I was just looking at some of the MTF charts and would recommend the EFS-55-250. It's also on sale but I think you might be much more happy with it. It also has IS (image stabilization) so it's quite the upgrade in my opinion. As long as you don't have a full frame camera you are good to go.
There are also plenty of youtube videos comparing the 2 lenses.

So I just got back from buying the 75-300mm, for the sale price plus 30 days for a full refund nothing to lose. I have a lot more research to do!

In Alberta Yes, but not in Saskatchewan or Quebec.

Well, you are going to laugh Bushmaster but after using the 300mm I just bought I am not completely satisfied. I called McBain Cameras and talked to a pro, I am pretty sure I am buying this one. State of the art, not a 20-year-old camera like the one I am using and it comes with a 3000mm.

these macro shots are just amazing!!! I hate you guys. Now you're making me want to go lens shopping. I carry a camera around but I dont seem to take enough wildlife shots.

The age of the camera wont make too much of a difference. Its usually all in the lens and the skill of the photographer. Unfortunately really good telephoto lens are insanely expensive. If you're trying to capture the hairs and fibres of a running dog or animal you're gonna need a really fast shutter speed. So for an animal sitting still you can get away with 1/125 to 1/250 but as soon as they bolt you're gonna need to bump it up to a minimum of 1/500 and if you want it alot more crisp so you dont see any blur in the feet ect. you're gonna have to be at 1/800 up to 1/1000.

Practice in areas with good lighting so you can keep you ISO lower. The lower the ISO the less noise. (grainy look)

A fast lense will help allow more light in.

I took a course from the canadian photography learning center. Best money I ever spent. I became a hundred times better at taking photos. If you are using a mirroless or DSLR camera you can unleash the cameras full potential by shooting in manual mode. I think the course is under 300 dollars.

I know this is not a wildlife photo but i thought it would be a good example using something moving 60kph

So this photo was taken with a slower shutter speed. I moved with the subject in order to capture it clear while blurring out the background. If I was to bump up the shutter speed to 1/1000 then the vehicle would look like it was parked. Wheels not moving and no blur in the background.
Keep in mind photography is all subjective so as long as you achieved the results in the photo you were hoping for then that is all that matters.

Just to build a little on what Huyfishin said,
The general rule of thumb to get a sharp picture of a stationary object is to use the reciprocal rule. What ever focal length you are using, you would use the reciprocal for the shutter speed. So a 50mm focal length would be a 1/50th sec shutter speed. 300mm would be 1/300 of a sec. etc.
It is a general rule as some people are more steady and others not so much. Also the image stabilization has come a long way so it's amazing what you can get away with now.

Last summer I got some mediocre shots of a hummingbird moth (White Lined Sphinx), but from 3-4 m away. Shows curled probe and sipping nectar.

Well gentlemen, I have rapidly come to the conclusion that I need to have way better equipment to get anywhere near close to your phenomenal photos!

I brought back the lens I bought this week and took these pictures with what I had to start with, it simply does not cut it! I look forward to sharing better pics next spring when the ice is gone and I have a new camera. But I may post some ice fishing pics.

Trying to get great detailed pics without a proper camera and lens is like going elk hunting with a .22 lol
