Default evening fly fishhing for walleyes

Stressed out from work, we finally got a break to hit the river,(the phones were still going off however!)
I took our scaffold trainer , who has just started fishing, and the other business agent up to Mountain rapids on the Athabasca.
(I posted a pic of mark with his first fly caught goldeye in another thread.)

Since Smitty ( the newbie ) had gear, I figured I'd get him out into the main, and land Mark at the base of the rapids so he could he could rolll cast into the boil and strip back.
This has worked great for me in the past , and I reall wanted him to hook up with a walleye on the fly rod.

The last thing I said the them was " I'm down at the landing, but my camera is dead, one of you guys bring a camera"
"Okay!"
Well, long story short, both guys hooked up, Smitty with a rattlin' rap and Mark with one of my tinsel weighted 'eye flies.
Mark however, hooked and landed no less than SEVEN walleyen in about 45 minutes , and two were a good size!

I hooked a few, but didn't care, as both guests in my boat got fish, and especially Smitty , since he has just started fishing, but seeing Mark hook up 'eye after 'eye sure was a hoot also!

NO CAMERA, NO PICS!!!
Next time for sure...!

Default Walleys

Hey great work bud. Its always an awesome feeling gettting your friends into fish.
Not trying to get your secret spot or anything but where abouts(area) were you guys fishing? Looking to get some walley on the fly here at the end of year, but just don't know where to go.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PM if you want,

Kokanee

Well freind, as I stated somewhere else, there ain't no secret spots!
I'll give anybody advice on where to fiish on the Athabasca, Clearwater, Mackay, or any other river up here!
However, places like Mountain Rapids are jet boat accesable only, so you need a friend who has one and knows how to get there once the water drops!
Are you in the Ft. Mac area?
PM me, and I can give you some places that are good for fishing from the bank.

Sounds like a great time. Anytime fishing is a great time, friends and fish just make it better.

What are you using for leader on toothy fish?

Walleye as a rule don't need a special leader due to the fact that their teeth are
more peg-like than serrated, like a jack's.
However, I teend to use a heavier tippet of masoon mono.
my friend was using a 2lb. tippet for trout!

Any time I'm after something with teeth, I use a flourocarbon leader in the same weight as my main line for gear, or correct for the conditions if I'm flyfishing.

I've landed pike on flouro leaders with no problems at all. It's tough stuff. Hard for the fish to see too, supposedly.
