Default Left Handed Hunting Rifle

Hi,

Shopping for my one rifle to do most all, and wondering what other lefty’s are shooting. I’m looking for a 6.5 or .270, Deer, sheep, and potentially elk. It should be capable of some long range shooting also (targets). I’ve been looking at the Tikka T3x, and the Remington SPS 700 so far.

Go buy yourself a LH Tikka in a 6.5x55. It will cover all your bases.

I’ve been looking at the Tikka, all that’s available is the blued version, can’t find the SS anywhere.

Even if the Rem is a lot cheaper, do yourself a favour and get the Tikka. Latest Rems have a lot of really bad QC issues and with Rem announcing bankruptcy I doubt they will be getting better.

If you want some other choices. Sako, Weatherby and Cooper make a great LH gun, so does Browning if you can get used to the 60 degree bolt lift.

Nice prices on those Tikkas. Seems P and D and them are really close in pricing if you exactly match the models.

I would take a Savage over a Remington SPS made in the last ten years for sure, unless I was using the SPS just for the action, was going to put a custom barrel on it and have the action trued. For a shoot out of the box gun, you are far more likely to get an accurate Savage than an accurate SPS.

That said, Tikka, Cooper, Browning and Sako all turn out consistently accurate out of the box guns.

There is a completely kitted out and scoped LH Sako AV with a McMillan stock (stock is worth over 600 alone) for $1500 in the buy sell. That would be a really
good deal for a gun to start hunting with. You couldn't put a Tikka together for that price.

That's what I went with for my first hunting rifle. Left hand 110 international trophy hunter with acutrigger in 270. Can't beat the price and is accurate and reasonably light.

I am not a 6.5 x 55 fan; but either is fine.

Either will perform on anything you want to harvest. I know the 270 ammo is sold everywhere you look should you ever be in a pinch.

As for a rifle, most modern guns shoot better than the shooter. It is a personal thing so make sure every time you take it, out it gives you pleasure on your decision.

IMHO

Lefty Tikka T3X in .308 here. I do have a lefty X-bolt in .243, but the Tikka is my do it all hunting and target rifle.

Not a caliber you listed, but go with a 280AI Cooper. Seeing as you mentioned elk I would go bigger than 6.5 or 270. If only going for elk a few times the 6.5 or 270 will be fine. I would still look at Cooper depending on budget. Christensen or Fierce are other options.

I bought a LH T3 from Bashaw in a .260rem stainless quite a few years ago, lightly used (less than one box of shells through it) for a great price! Came to find out that firearm in that setup and caliber is fairly rare.

I know that it has been suggested not to go with the M700 SPS, but ill put my 25 cents in. I have bought a pile of SPS's the last couple years. Three are short action, three are long action. I pick them up when they go on sale, and can be had for a song. My youth 243 shoots very good with a upgraded B&C stock. I have a 30 06 that shoots very fine stock. The other 30 06 shot okay, with minimum load development. I ended up have it barreled, bedded, re stocked, and upgraded the trigger. Now it is very accurate. I had problems with the first 300 win mag sps. The mounting holes on the receiver were rough, and one actually stripped. That same rifle also did not extract very well. It shot an inch, but will be rebuilt into something else. I have a SPS varmint in 223 that shoots/feeds great. What i like about the M700 is the customization, and availability of parts. I have many M700s, not all sps. So im sitting on a good supply of parts that are interchangeable. All are left handed. My LTR in 308 is such a good shooter, and really neat rifle. Trigger tech triggers are my preferred trigger, but timney/Jewel make great triggers as well. If you like to tinker, and collect id say go with an SPS. They can be reworked, and upgraded over time. That said if you want one, and done go Tikka/browning.

My brother is left and always shot a remmy pump. He bought a second on in 3006 when he had enough of the 243 for big game.

So currently I have a lefty Ruger 7mmRM, Tikka 270WSM and a righty Savage 2506. And when I am just going out for deer, I usually choose the 2506. I would like to hear your guys opinions for a new lefty between either 2506, 260 or 6.5 Creedmoor

Not to be unkind but exactly how does your question differ at all from the questions and answers above. On top of which you have experience with at least three of the more common lefty guns. Would think you are starting to build a knowledge base where you can decide for yourself whether you want another like what you have or try something new.
