Default Kananaskis River

Hello flyfishers, I went for a drive out to Kananaskis Lakes with the boat today, fished the lower and got a couple small rainbows and something big broke off. He spooled me into the backing before popping the leader. On the way home I couldn't help but notice some beautiful waters as I was driving along Kananaskis River. Anyone fish it at all?

Haven’t fished it myself but seen discussions on it before and apparently quite low fish numbers (mainly browns I believe). I think the varying water levels from dam messes with the fish/bugs. From the highway some of the pools do look really nice. I suppose you never know until ya try though !

Sounds like a great way to kill an afternoon. Going to have to give it a try once levels are down and the water clears up.

Best looking water in Alberta that has zero fish... I mean they are there... It just takes A LOT of work to find them...

People get lucky don't get me wrong...

Try it and see for yourself!

Careful though, when TA releases water, it gets REALLY high & fast very quickly!!

Constant fluctuations do not help it could be some great water with consistent flows instead of the yoyo effect now in place ..... some fish to be had where it flows into Barrier

I have fished it on numerous occasions and they are correct it can be quit challenging. I have caught browns and whitefish in the river. Be careful when you are there once they release water from the dam it does flow very fast and has quite the current. From what I have seen they usually start releasing water around 3 pm.

When they start releasing water...be sure you are on the same side of the river as your vehicle!!!

You have no idea, I fished it one day. I was on the other side and had to walk k's to find a crossing location.

That creek is the biggest shame out there, the possibility of it being a World Class mountain brown stream should not be understated. It has many things going for it and when you find a brown it could be a real trophy.

There is rainbows and cutthroat between lower Lake and Barrier. And as someone above mentioned...be careful of the dams opening. I was waist deep last weekend and got caught in there when they opened and had no choice but to exit on the wrong side of the river from my car...luckily I. Was able to stumble threw the woods back to my access point that was only knee deep to cross back over. There was lots of surface feeding going on and I missed a few hits but hooked into a beauty cutthroat.

Every time I drive past, I look at it wistfully. I have never dropped a line in it though. So Browns and RMW huh? Interesting.

For those with experience on it, can you give us a vague description of where the most productive water is? Widowmaker? Visitor Centre? Canoe Meadows? Near to Seebee?

Are there any dams above Barrier? How is the fishing up there?
