The dealership will be able to advise you of proper break in procedure. More then likely light driving with lots of variation in RPM.

The engine manufacture will specify what they have designed for, recommend, and will work the best for their engine.

You will get a variety of suggestions regarding "break-in" of Outboard engines.

From my experience as a Mfg Rep for a couple of Major Maine engine Brands, both 2 stroke and 4 stroke outboards require very little, if any, break-in.
My recommendation is to run it as you would do normally and avoid any prolonged WOT for and hour or so. Then you're go to go.

Mercury specifies their recommended break in period in the manual. I suggest you follow that to a "T". That will help ensure there are no issues with warranty in the future.

I broke in a 2018 200 Verado Pro last spring and IIRC there were a few hours of varying rpm, followed by a few hours with shorter periods at max RPM. I used the time to do some Autocharting of a lake I fish regularly so it felt like I was getting some benefit besides just burning gas.

ETA: The Pro XS was new for last year. The previous Pro XS was a 2 stroke, the new one is a 4 stroke. Keep that in mind if you are searching for break in procedures on the Pro XS motors. The break in procedures for the old version and new version will likely differ.

Go with what the MFG recommends. More importantly, make sure you are propped correctly.Your prop must match the recommended RPM at WOT. If you haul heavy loads, get a prop to match. Lugging an O/B causes more problems than "improper" break-in by quite a margin.

Just gonna put this out there. Run it full throttle until it blows or you run out of fuel , which ever comes first. Hehehe.

Ask the dealer or specs in the manual. It should say in the manual.

Default Run-in

Hey Kim473, I will be all over that, sounds like a plan for a 29000.00 motor.

On any motor that i have rebuilt . Let it warm up before moving then i normally say do not take it past 1/2 speed for the first hr.
And let it cool down on idle before turning off the key at all times of its life.
Do not take many people in the boat on its first outing as this is to much load to get the boat out of the water before half speed.
Enjoy your summer.
