Default Big goose

Many years ago in Sask. we shot seven geese out of a flock that seemed to be extra large so one of the hunters had a certified scale he ran a butcher shop so we weighed them all. The largest was 23 lbs. and the smallest was 17 lbs. I have been on many goose hunts and never have seen any this size before or since.

Ive never actually put one up on a scale, but knowing how heavy a 20 lb fish weighs, ive had some i swear were at least in that range. With that being said, most info you try and dig up says thats EXTREMELY rare.

Wow...I've handled thousands of dead honkers and have only seen a couple 15lbers.

23lbs...?. Jeepers. Hard to believe.

I got on this weekend at 15.1 and that is my biggest ever that I have weighed. I had a couple others 13lbs and this was a bigger bird. I cannot believe the fat on them.

I would say the biggest around 12 pound mark
the smallest rt around the 3 1/2 pound mark
I've heard of the rare 16 to 25 pond birds
I also have heard of the rare sasquatch
and even more rare the smart blonde species

Might have been an epic world record snow goose like the one posted here many years ago...so big it had a trumpet like call.

I would say in the 13-14 pound range myself but I've never put one on a scale.

Been waterfowl hunting for over 40 years and got my biggest bird this year at 13.5lbs. Got two others out of the same flock that were over 12.

Default Big geese

Hey guys I wish I had at least a photo or some other proof to show you. It was a long time ago but I remember it well. The provincial wildlife biologist said they were called giant Canada geese. He had seen some himself in another part of the province. Piker

12 yrs. of guiding goose hunts and always would hear about those 20 plus pound turkey er I mean honkers.

Biggest I had weighed was just short of 15lbs and it was a very large bird.

Are there 20plus pound honkers out there, I don't know but after being involved in several thousand kills I have some doubts. Most big ones would run in the 12-13 lbs. range.

But anything is possible, after all there is a big foot right?

Anything over 14 lb in Alberta (probably Sask too) is about as common as a B&C whitetail,,, not saying they aren't out there, just most guys will never shoot one. Geese suffer significant ground shrink if you weigh them on a certified scale.

For geese to to go into that 15 -20 lb range, they will most likely come from a non migratory flock.

Over 20 lb is certainly possible for a domesticated captive bird, but in the wild???? Maybe in a resident flock in the Southern states somewhere where there is no winter.

I shot my first canada 50 years ago, since then we have weighed some over 13 lb (a couple real close to 14 lb, but no matter how we tried not over it) and usually get a few 12 lb birds every season. Most "honkers" we get will typically be in that 8 - 11 lb range.

Default Big Canada Geese

Have taken many in the mid to high 12's, best I have weighed was 13.6. Biggest I have shot, not weighedhad pink legs and feet with a few black patches on them. Was out this weekend after the elusive 13lber and the smaller ones would be in first and the big ones hanging back 60-100yds. First group in wouldn't hang in the spread till the big ones came into range and spilled the works. Over the years I have found that unless the big birds come in by themselves(groups of 2 to 8) 13lbers are tough to get.

I shot a passing goose two years ago that I weighed at 15lbs on the bathroom scale. Not too accurate, but it was huge. It's the only bird I've ever seen my dog hesitate to approach, but she was only 11mos old at the time...

I work with a guy who swears he gets as good as 8.0 L/100 (35 mpg) in a 2500 HD factory stock duramax;
Then there's another guy who claims his last moose he shot by Slave Lake fully dressed weighed over 1200lbs, each rear quarter was near 400 lbs;

So I'm not surprised to hear Canada geese weighing close to 25 lbs. Maybe we will see upwards of 30 lbs before this thread has run its course.
Sorry for the derail, just had to comment.
Piker, no disrespect meant towards you, just too many one uppers out there.

14 lbs for me, most in the 10 - 12 range.

I'll only shoot geese that are above 35lb.. Now that I think about it, I've never shot a goose .... but I'm trying to find somewhere to go before the season ends. So I'll keep you posted if I find a shooter.

A popular US based waterfowl site offered a substantial prize for many years for the first person to send in a 20 lb Canada goose.....No one won.
then 19............
then 18............I believe someone finally won in the low 18 lbs .

We may have shot one of the smallest this year. Was about the same size as a mallard, had them side by side and it was touch and go which one was bigger.
We've shot at least one that cracked 13lbs, quite a few in the 12 range. I remember the day we got that 13lb'r. Dog had to bring it up a steep hill out of the water, she had to reset herself, you could see it in her attitude, "thees one eez a heavy muther!!!" Seems to me the other two were both 12lbr's.
See some of the ones that winter on the Bow and wonder just how big they really are, some look like some pretty good sized birds.

Canada geese range from 75 to 110 cm (30 to 43 in) in length and have a 127–185 cm (50–73 in) wingspan.[11] Among standard measurements, the wing chord can range from 39 to 55 cm (15 to 22 in), the tarsus can range from 6.9 to 10.6 cm (2.7 to 4.2 in) and the bill can range from 4.1 to 6.8 cm (1.6 to 2.7 in). The largest subspecies is the B. c. maxima, or the giant Canada goose, and the smallest (with the separation of the cackling goose group) is B. c. parvipes, or the lesser Canada goose.[12] An exceptionally large male of race B. c. maxima, which rarely exceed 8 kg (18 lb), weighed 10.9 kg (24 lb) and had a wingspan of 2.24 m (7.3 ft). This specimen is the largest wild goose ever recorded of any species.[13]

It is more than possible.

It seems I am outnumbered but all I can say it was weighed on a certified scale and all the hunters there that day have passed on. Also back in the daynone of us owned cameras. I am 78 yrs. old but my memory is still very good
