Default Getting rid of the internet

The other thread got me thinking do we really need the internet. Now that I am retired I only seem to use it for jokes buddies send me and for going on sites like the outdoorsmen. I check some news and some obituaries. Older people seem to check obituaries to see who they know. So I am thinking maybe I do not need the internet. If I cancel the net and cable t.v. I can save $120.00 per month. Who knows?

I agree. I am leaning towards this train of thought myself...

Sounds like a great idea, but can you get regular channel by doing this? Channel like CTV, Global, etc?

If your primary use of the internet is checking the obituaries..you probably DON'T need the internet.

Other use it for:

- tv streaming
- gaming
- social media
- school and work projects
- business
- news
-porn (duh)

The list goes on.... Hard to imagine living and raising a family in this day and age with no connection to the outside world.

Sorry to hijack your thread but my .02$

Yes you can, not in the traditional format or anything but yes any show that's on your cable tv will be on an android box. I haven't yet tried watching a live news cast with the box I got last week but there's an option on it. Plus CTV, Global, etc, they stream news on their apps so just buy a chromecast or another way to stream from your phone to your TV.

I would go a step further, scrap the andoid box, get a Chromecast and send what you're watching from your phone/tablet with an app like Terrarium.

Android boxes are great as long as you keep up with the constant updating, etc - and eventually, they all brick.

Cheers

Just cut it off. I haven't watched cable in years and I don't miss it. Any good shows can be watched online.

He's suggesting cutting his internet off too.

Wow, I would seriously NEVER consider giving up the internet. It's a wealth of information, deals, entertainment, connectivity, ... short everything!

I recall candidate election platforms that included “improved rural access” ... is the net subsidized by taxpayer dollars?

That is weird. I have 3 (mine and a couple buddy's) that are what I have found to be 'bricked'.

Won't update, and the available streams are diminishing very quickly. Glad yours is working!

Exactly. Ive saved myself hundreds or dollars every year by going with Internet only.

I pay $63.00 for top of the line Internet service, and, nothing more. TV through Android box, home phone through VOIP (if you want) and Calgary news through IP simulcast.

Every two-three years I buy new, updated Android box for around $200. Use old one as back-up.

Only potential downsides are rural Internet may be garbage (I am urban). And, you have to keep your Android box software updated. Updates are done by yourself and take a minute every month or two.

Really surprised to see how many people admit to piracy publicly.

Why does this surprise you? You can get an android box at any local electronics store. It's intent is streaming video, and the apps are generally pre loaded for you.

I'm surprised you're surprised.

Android boxes are not illegal to purchase, own, search or watch content. Content providers are the ones holding the bag, so to speak. Not your personal issue.

You can buy Android boxes at major retailers (not recommended as you still need a "go-to guy"). Always buy the box with fastest processor, highest memory, current KODI and Android versions with Google Play pre-installed. Buy from a reputable seller who knows what they are talking about. Have him/her demo a unit for you. Plan on updating it often and replacing a couple years down the road when the specs become obsolete.

I also rip tags off newly purchases pillows and drink milk a day past its indicated best before date.

Frankly, I don't care if people pirate or not. Some 7% or more of Canadian households are running android boxes.

Canada has some of the strictest piracy laws, but yet, they are not upheld. The copyright act that Harper passed is up for another look - and companies like Bell, Rogers and others of course are crying foul. Looking to censor the internet in any way they can now. These companies want to kill net neutrality through NAFTA.

You probably don't know of the lawfirm DrapeauLex, but they've been buying the domains of some of the largest Kodi pirated addons. Navi-X, TVAddons and all it's subsidiaries are now owned by this lawfirm. If you've been running the same android box for some time, and haven't removed these addons, you're likely being watched.

Trust your VPN service? Anyone can set one up - lawfirms, governments, anti-privacy advocates. It's been done in the past, and If Joe Public uses them, too bad. Even if the VPN is legit, logging will occur at some point. If 1000 people jump into a swimming pool, guaranteed someone is going to pee in it - that means tracking everyone.

It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Internet has its quirks for sure. Find something good and it gets screwed up eventually, search out another source. You can watch news whenever and as many times as you want. Reuters feed has most of the vids that the newscasts use, so, you can catch most of it off one website, other than the local stuff.
With net neutrality gone in the US, Canada won't be far behind, get ready to get bled by the ISP's.
I'll take internet over cable tv any day given the choice though, far more variety when I want to watch it or see it, don't miss shows on a given evening because they are on vid out there somewhere.
Keep the internet, you can actually get your money's worth from it.

Some of you oldfarts certainly have no need for the internet. My grandma has never used the internet before in her life, and likely never will. Doesn't affect her life one bit.

Young guy like myself, I'd put my whole life at a serious disadvantage by not having internet. Wanna know how many job applications are now done through the internet? Or how much school related content is web-accessible only? How do I meet hot, lonely singles in my area without it?
