Default 2013 f150 turbo replacement

Blew the turbos on my truck. Only 65000 km on it. Kentwood ford estimate is $ $6100. WOW ! Labor cost is only $ 1487 , 8.5 hrs which is reasonable.

Now, I can get 2 turbos from amazon for $ 1000, dealer cost is $ $1667 each.

Should I buy from amazon and replace my self ?

I thought these things should last about 150,000 km ?

Hope you never have to replace your turbos.

I wouldn't be replacing anything until I figured out what caused the turbos to fail.

And yes, diy or find a mechanic. Dealerships are ripoffs.

The bigger question is why did both turbos go? One possibly but both was caused by something else. Really don't replace turbos very often. Did they tell you what caused both to go? What were your problems with the truck that you brought it in?

The Ford parts come with 2 year unlimited km warranty. Parts and labour. Or they do at the dealer I work at. Should be the same there.

If the cheaper ones fail under the warranty timeframe will they cover the labour to replace or only the part. This would come from the part manufacturer not who is installing them.

I’m not familiar with an Ecopoof setup, but aren’t they compound turbos?

So if the first turbo fails it sends it’s shrapnel through the second one?

I'd suggest replacing the turbo, and rest of the truck with a Silverado... but back to the smaller issue.. I think towing anything is hard on those turbos. May not be any other issues. Dealer turbo might have 2 year warranty and the one from online might have 30 day warranty. You have to think about this when getting those expensive parts from online.

I would check out sgi salvage or facebook forums or kijiji for someone parting out a crashed truck. I have seen complete engines sell for $2000 you can likely get the turbos for $500-1000 used

Mine had no issues too, until the turbos just went . No before signs of them going, just bam and making lots of noise. Largest trailer pulled was a 19 ft aluminum bass style boat, and that was over a year ago.

You should start thinking about how much replacement cost when yours go. Start saving your nickles and dimes.

I'd want to know what happened to cause both to fail.

I have a 2013 F150 and I've put something like 20,000 km's pulling my 24' trailer. Another 5,000 pulling my 18' hunting trailer and several thousand pulling my boat. My truck has just over 155,000 km's on it. Never had an issue with the turbo's....or anything else really.

Oh FYI, I've pulled the big trailer, with it loaded, up the Coquihala hwy and throughout central/southern BC, North Idaho and the Pacific Northwest so lots of big hills and mountains. So not easy "driving #1 from Calgary to Winterpeg" hauling either. That engine has had to do some work.

As to repair, if it's out of warranty and you're a decent mechanic and you're comfortable doing it, I'd say do it yourself. If not, get someone qualified and reputable, that way if something screws up after the fact, they pay to fix it.

I thought i hear something awhile back that the older Ecoboost had the license plate holders in the middle of the front bumper. because of this the inter-cooler had poor air flow and cause turbos to fail.

the newer Ecoboosts (i think 14 and up but dont hold me to that) now have that license plate holder off to the side.

No you have it backwards, from introduction 2011-14 plate bracket was mounted on the offset bumper pad. 2015 to present, dead centre right in front of the intercooler although it’s easily removable with just a light pull.
Intercooler problems were in the early years with condensation build up in the core and it couldn’t escape. A simple fix was to drill a 1/8 hole in the lower corner to allow it to blow out. I’ve heard the ceramic bearings story but can’t remember what years it pertains to.

In my opinion, the main problem is temperature, not high temperature though, cause let’s face it every turbo can run hotter than the melting point of the aluminum pistons. But temperature shock from a cold engine to semi-full boost. In a diesel, the engine itself makes enough “cold noise” that out of habit, you feel guilty getting on the fuel until it’s ready(warm). But on the 2.7/3.5’s (we have two in the driveway) @ -30 from a cold start the engine doesn’t seem to mind heavier loads a lot sooner.... but do the turbos? Just my opinion. Btw they are not compounded, one turbo feeds one side of the block.

It is odd with that many km . My duramaz 300000 km and no issue . Previous post claimed turbos went cause of intercooler. Makes no sense air paint is air filter , mass air sensor , turbo , intercooler, then engine .

Interested to hear how the repair goes, I have a 14 with 131000 on it now with zero issues other than a couple recalls.

Curious as to what kind of driving you do, if it's a lot of shorter type trips or more highway. Also why do you think that they should only last 150,000?

I don't hear of too many turbos going on these trucks - sounds like something unusual.

I think you should be able to do the repair yourself. A few manifold bolts might be a bit fussy, but with the low miles I think it'll be ok.

Something to think about - ford does offer upgraded (larger) turbos for these trucks that seem to make some more power. Might be a fun upgrade since you're spending the money.

I have an aversion to parts failures that I can not explain.
To have both sides go simultaneously is more than worrying.
Sure they be spinning well over 25k rpm at times, but it seems like sitting on a time bomb.
Hopefully the new Ford Edge has better luck

Some reading on turbocharger failure analysis might be a good idea before you replace them.

I had a rental ecoboost for a couple weeks recently. I wasn’t a fan of the number of times that engine started and stopped at red lights. At the time I was wondering how long the starter would last but it’s likely not doing the turbos any favours either.

I think half pickereled makes a good point about turbos on gas engines not getting the same amount of respect a diesel might. Cold starts, hot shutdowns.

Out of curiosity, in what way did the turbos fail?

As the others have said, it would be good to find out why the turbo went I have a 2013 f150 with 436000kms and have never had any issues with the turbo.

That's a respectable number for that type of truck 👌

Welcome to the new norm for vehicles. Have a 17 Cherokee and an 18 F150, both have the auto start stop feature and it’s the first thing I disable when driving in town. Love both vehicles a lot, just don’t like they shut off every time you stop...

#1 failure of turbo’s is lubrication all these hi tec engines need synthetic oil and changed more often. The alcohol in our fuels eats the oil additives and cause oil sludge prematurely leading to engine premature failure on oil lubed parts. Ceramic bearings have been used on turbos for years

I think the cause of my failure is over speed. I did have a tuner on the truck. The tuner may have allowed the turbos to spin faster than they should. Will update the installation progress in a week or two when the parts arrive. Ordered online . $ 1600 worth of parts. $ 1000 for the turbos and $ 600 of other parts such as new tubes and seals etc... About 1/2 the cost of what the dealer quoted for parts if not a bigger savings. If I do it myself it will save me about $4000 as compared to dealers quote. Dealer only quoted 8.5 hrs labor which I think is reasonable for the job.
