Default rust breaker

Just a quick question ...
I just bought an older van that has a trailer hitch.

Problem is, that the ball mount is rusted in place. ( no pin )

The guy that I bought it from said it was like that when he bought it ten years ago.
He tried removing it , but gave up after the ball peen hammer he was using, bounced back and kissed his shin pretty good.

This thing is so rusted solid, it's like it's welded in place.

What's the best product to eat, kill, dissolve, remove, get rid of, make go away the rust?

I'd like to get this thing out , so I can clean up the reciever , and use a newer ball mount ( that removes easly )

Thanks for any info you can offer .

Bob

I would use an oxy and proper hammer but if you want a penetrating oil jetlube 1234 is the best I’ve ever used.

In all seriousness, I work in an industrial industry where this is always a problem. We use an aerosol spray called "Nuts Off"
Heating the outer member may make it expand, and a BFH might help coaxing the interior piece out. Just be wary if there are petroleum products applied, and then putting heat to it....

Get some good penetrating oil or spray and let it soak in or heat the heck out of it and pound it as it cools and if you got a big pipe wrench pound and turn, somtimes this well separate the rust ,but be very careful with heat near a gas engine specially and older model. You might remove more than you think if it explodes.

Find a guy good with torches and cut it off or zip it,again be careful with gas fumes.

Seafoam DEEP CREEP is hands down the BEST. But those hitches stuck may never come out. DEEP CREEP soaked for a few days, serious heat with oxy/acy red hot and a HUGE swinging press...at the end of the day, just replace the hitch..
Weekly experience with using penetrating fluids, DEEP CREEP is hands down better than oil jetlube 1234..YMMV

I’ll use a Liquid Wrench and heat, alternating the two. That and a 48”
Ridgid pipe wrench solves many ills. For replacing it though I’d just introduce it to my 9” Makita grinder.

For nuts or pipe fittings one can cut through the nut and then hammer a cold chisel into the slot to open it up slightly, then it will unscrew with reasonable ease.

Old farmer trick. Mix a 50/50 batch of acetone and ATF. Spray or pour on and let soak an hour or so. Thank me later.

Rust off gold by wurth is by far the best on rust. This is all we use the the shop now, it is guaranteed to work. We tried the deep creep by sea foam and this is not even in the same ball park as rust off gold.

Unbolt the hitch and soak it with a rust remover. Then if have access put it in a press and press it out. If it won’t come that way heat it in press while it has pressure on it. A good 20 ton press or better should easily get it this way

Just park it somewhere in Lethbridge, someone will be along shortly to steal it.

Have never been beat by a rusty nut or bolt when Deep Creep is around.

Kroil.

The above works great too but Kroil is my choice, has been for years. And yes, I’ve used the majority of them on the market.

Pshhh! Just attach a tow strap to an immovable object and loop it around the ball hitch with slack left in the line. Throw ‘er in drive and give ‘er a nudge. Should solve your problem! Lol.

Tried that with my brothers hitch one time, and it wasn't seized up all that long. Chained it up to the bobcat and gave it it series of ever sharper jerks, with me in the bobcat seat backing up, I decided to stop trying when the chain broke and ended up my lap after hitting pretty hard on my shoulder. So whatever you do please be careful.

If it's rusted that bad , after you clean up / out all the rust a new hitch will fit loose.

If I were you , I'd buy a new (or used) complete hitch.

I kept the one I had on my 95 & again on another truck.
Been meaning to see what year vehicles it fits.....was on F-250s.

Same situation with a hitch I had, hit my knee on it many times tried every chemical known to man, hooked up to pole and just about put myself through the windshield.
We removed the hitch welded it to a table in the welding shop and tried the 10 ton overhead crane, it started to bend the hitch, the receiver held firm. In the end we zip cut the bottom pounded it open to get the receiver out then welded it back together.

I don't think the hitch never got used again it was just a stubborn welder buddy that wouldn't give up.

Hook up a tiny little trailer to it and hit the highway, guaranteed it will pull out.

My friend had a truck with the receiver "stuck" in. We used WD40 stuff, we used heat and a big sledge, a chain to a tele pole with a little tug. Nada. It was a shop truck prior and after a little closer look, someone welded the receiver to the back of the hitch.
