Default Trunk Road Conditions, Hinton to Nordegg

Thinking of making the Hinton to Nordegg trip with a bumper hitch trailer and doing the random camping thing, I am quite familiar with the trunk road south of Nordegg but have never complete the north jaunt. It could just be gossip but I was told it was not advisable as road conditions were very rough in some spots. Have any of you A.O. members recently covered this stretch and if so what's your thoughts. Thank you for your reports. David.

Drove there a couple of weeks ago. Rough, but not impassable, just drive for road conditions. Campgrounds were about empty. Nice drive.

Big storm east of the forks today, was told the elk river got really sloppy after that. It was a complete dust storm yesterday. Seems to be either a mud bog or dust storm this year.

Some of my favourites are along that road, however I have no completed the drive before. The last time I tried the road was signed as closed due to washout. I was up near Hinton, Robb area recently and road was rough but fine.

Just a case of how willing you are to traverse rough roads, and how badly you want to make it to Hinton. If the final destination doesn’t matter I would go for it. If the travelling gets rough you can pull in to camp and make that the furthest point!

Looks like Hwy 40/ trunk road is closed south of Hinton due to a washout. Might have to go south from Edson on Hwy 47 to access the trunk road.

Call 310-0000 and ask to be connected to Hinton F&W office. Ask a CO how the roads are. They should know. County road department might tell you too.

The thing out there is if there is a heavy rain for a couple hours or more the roads become way more interesting. The road is probably already soft from recent rains.

The section of the FTR between Hinton and Nordegg has more industry on it than further south so expect more logging trucks and oil & gas trucks.

The Elk River road is in a league of it's own. Gotta make the list of Alberta's worst.
