Default 308 LR loads

i have a friend that is having trouble coming up with a consistent load for long range ( 1000 yards) . the gun is a factory rem with a 26" tube. he would like to stick with the 155 if possible but has not ruled out the 175 gr bullets. any one out there shooting a similar combination that could offer a little help with a good load would be appreciated. thanks a lot guys.....

Run about 45-46 grains of Varget behind a 155 Seirra Palma or lapua Scenar, just touching the lands.
This is the load that 90% of the Palma shooters are using.
Your friend must realize however, thatt LR shooting involves a little more tan setting up on the bench and aiming, for instance , for argument's sake, a bullet that gets blown by wind 1/2" off at 100 yards will be more than 1 FOOT at 1,000.
Has he experience in 1,000 yard shooting ?

The Sierra Palma 155gr with Varget powder is the most accurate load I have found for my Remington 308, but I don't have access to a 1000 yard range so I cannot comment on that aspect. One thing to consider before going with heavier bullets is the twist rate of the rifle. Mine is 1 in 12" which works well with 155 grain bullets and 168's. A faster twist rate of 1 in 10" would be better for 175's and 190 match bullets. My friend has a Tikka Target 308 with a 1 in 11" twist....his likes the 175's.

You hit the nail on the head with this post
I know hornady gives a twist rate on the box ITS very important to match your barrel twist rate to you bullet.

since the rem rifles are throated so long he is unable to get near the lands and still have much of the bullet in the case with the 155's. if he tries to get near the lands there is only about.080" of the bullet in the case and i don't think that is good at all. he has been using imr 4895 powder, and the results are not bad... extreme spread is most often 25 - 30 fps with SD in the 9-11 range so all that is good, the speed is mid 2800 range but the grouping at 100 yards is usually in the .9 -1.25 range. i am starting to think that is all the factory barrel will do.. which is wierd for a rem, usually if you play with em enough they will tighten right up. he has been using magnum primers so i am not sure if that has something to do with it, but all the numbers are good so i don't know what to think/
