Any quality fixed blade will do the trick. Won’t punch through a shoulder blade, but neither does a 60lb bow shooting the same broad head. Try to find the right mix of arrow weight / broad head weight and speed to maximize kinetic energy for a full pass through.

I would consider a quality fixed, I use Tooth of the Arrow. My spring bear was down and dead in sight, 30 yards away.

They are like a muzzy but better. They fly better and are one piece, so they are way more durable.

40-45 lbs. I’d be using a 2 blade head- pick anyone you want.
Or a longer profile 3blade like a wensel woodsman. 3 blades are nice for bears as they leak a bit more. In either case give the head a “tanto tip” as long needle tips have the nasty habit of bending over when they hit ribs etc. And get it nice and sharp. Then study the anatomy with him to make sure he understands where to put the arrow. Sounds like a great father son project.

I have had great success with Black Widow Innovations Broadheads. I shot both the PX2 and the Widowmaker this year. Solid heads that do some damage and fly great.

If you took a 4 blade slick trick and a G5 Montec and took the best features of both put into one...Tooth of the Arrow is what you get.

My very first choice would be any two blade broadhead. Then almost any of the other fixed blades after that.

I live my tooth of the arrow heads, wicked one piece construction, great penetration and they fly like field points

I agree with the above! Tooth of the arrow, They shoot and group like my field tips. No fuss one piece construction just keep them dry as they are high carbon steel or you will see surface rust start. You could leave a light coat of oil or similar product on them.

Tooth of the arrow...those look like they’re bombproof. I’d hesitate to use them with a lighter draw like the OP was mentioning. Tips aren’t too sharp and the angle of the blades is pretty blunt, I’d worry about penetration.

My buddies 72 year old mother has killed 3 mule deer, a bear, and two moose with them right at 40lbs, keep the shots reasonable (30ish yards) no issues. Because of the short profile and 1”X1” 4 blade design they are quite forgiving and don’t plane as long as you bow is tuned. I recommend paper tune followed by a bareshaft tune to 20 yards. Helical 4 fletch helps as well.

Out of the box, they did very good in Born and Raised Outdoors broadhead test.

It came second For penetration, and second overall in the whole test.

Here is a group at 100yards TOTA, 15 deg uphill with a slight breeze. This sold me on how well they can shoot, my followup shot on my elk this year was 87 yards and I had full confidence taking it. The first shot at 45yards was fatal, but with elk still on their feet more is better. I have since switched to a 4 fletch helical as well.

Spot on post, I can attest to the helical four fletch being a great addition, with a properly tuned bow they are the most accurate broad head I’ve shot and with my bow tech at 70lbs I have had no problems with penetration, neither has my nephew with his 40lb bow he just kept the shots closer (40 yard max)

The Qad Exodus could be a good possibility for him to try.

A buddy used ironwills on a moose and they took a weird deflection in the ribs and didn’t enter the chest cavity. Could have been a one of, but it basically rode the ribs on the outside of the chest cavity.

My brother shoots ozcuts and has had nothing but awesome things to say about them. Shot 2 deer and a bear with the same head. Nothing wrong with it.

Yeah and I know of a few other people who shoot them and have said nothing but good about them. Maybe just a bad batch but after my friend being ignored by customer service and the owner of the company kinda put a bad taste in my mouth which is unfortunate because I really like their designs and the fact they are a solid one piece but after seeing how hitting a white tail shoulder blade destroyed idk.

Oh for sure would put a bad taste in anyone’s mouth. He hasn’t had to deal with the customer service yet so I guess we will see.

I checked out the ozcuts, they definitely look tough! I do not like 2 blade broadheads personally though.

I actually won in a long bomb competition it at a shoot a few years back. I shoot broadheads into it and it holds up pretty good.

I hunt at 70lbs but my buddies mom hunts at 40lbs and she has passed through moose at 30 yards with the broadheads I use.
