Default Breaking in that new auto-loading shotgun

Had a coyote called in to 15-20 yards full run...

Shot and miss followed by a failed ejection. The coyote stopped and laughed for a second and then kept running.

I was shooting Federal (my first mistake?) 00 buck 2 3/4" - MAGNUM as the box proclaims.

I have a Remington 1187, shurshot stock, 23" barrel, EF turkey/coyote choke. I added a Tacstar sidesaddle, which I know can cause the action to be slow/poor, but I am sure that this is not the case.

Just got back from the range - I don't want this tragedy to happen again.

Federal Trap loads - no reload, no eject. This is what I expected.

Federal 00 buck, 2 3/4 - mixed results? 1/5 ejected and reloaded. Junk.

Kent Fast Steel - 3" BB - works immaculately, but steel and EF choke don't mix.

Kent Turkey - 3 #4-6- Ouch. These shells actually hurt to shoot. Works great and I have never seen shells eject so far before.

Remington - 3 000 - works great, same price as Federal, only complaint is that it seems to shoot lower than all the other shells.

Any thoughts on breaking in this action? After a good clean tonight I will try to call in a few more coyotes tomorrow morning.

Thanks all.

Maybe it wasn't oiled properly from the factory? That in combination with cheap shells might have done it.

Good luck with shooting coyotes with a shotgun. I could have got one, called a pair into 11 yards, 2506 left a bit of a hole. A bit hard finding them in the scope when it is on 9X

Smile Hit with first shot?

The best advice I ever got was "forget about the second or third shot hit with the first".

At 15 yards I think that you can do it. So what if the shells don't cycle.

If it really bothers you, get a pump, 100% cycles.

most new guns have a thick yellow waxs packing grease and a lot of shops wipe the guns clean to look at, put don't clean inside the action. and this can cuase all kinds of problems.good cleaning with a solvent usualy fixs it, if thats the problem.

My semi shotgun had to be broken in to shoot light skeet loads.

I have never had a problem with mag loads cycling.

In the beginning I had to use heavy target loads for about 200 rounds then I could shoot the light loads. In the beginning the light loads would stove pipe on me.

Check your manual to see what it recommends for breaking in your shotgun.
Depending on the make you may have a plugged gas vent that causes intermittent cycling issues.

Isnt that shotgun supposed to shoot all loads interchangably? If your having ejection problems on a brand new gun, there is someting wrong, take it back to where you bought it.
The 1100's used to be finicky about being real clean but the new age semi auto should go through any type of load with no problem.
