He's quartering away which makes him look closer to 4/5ths then he actually is. A lot of guys have probably got themselves in trouble by shooting rams just because they tip up, probably saw 15 rams last year that tipped up and non of them were legal.

I agree doesn't look legal to me. Tipping up is definitely not the way to consider wether it's a legal ram or not.

Don't forget, the base of the horn is under the hair not at hair line. The line on this Ram tips back a fair ways. A better pic would be needed.

I have all the respect in the world for anyone who holds back in an uncertain situation, but how can you be positive that the guy the following day shot a short ram? Maybe he took a gamble and came out on top. What makes you believe that the COs go for "close enough"? As far as I'm concerned, I would probably pass on the sheep pictured above if I had any doubts but if another hunter did harvest the ram and if it was in fact legal....well I'd try and be humble and happy for he or she.

that ram is not legal. He isn't legal in the pic let alone turn profile. The horn shape is what screws him up and makes him less legal than a typical forward curl. This one swings back and doesn't help him any. Would he get a pass? Maybe , but it isn't legal and I am pretty confident in that

Tip up? That has nothing to do with it being legal......
Its a start to really see what potential it has to being legal and that is it. On close ones you really have to pay attention to horn configuration as well. Sweep back or sweep forward. In the end it doesn't matter as long as the tip is in the right spot..

I'm also in the not legal camp and have passed on better because sheep hunting is a reward, not meat, hunt. Let's keep it in perspective.
Let's keep up with the pics; I'm sick of hearing zippers and seeing rulers.

I am surprised at a few of the responses by some very experienced sheep hunters so far.
I have very little doubt that is a legal ram. Is he close - absolutely. Could he be legal by less than 1/2 inch? Yes.
My rule is this: if you have the Kahona's to shoot a ram you aren't 100% certain is legal, you better have the Kahona's to take the consequences of being wrong.
If you shoot him, then measure, find out he is short and walk away....you better remember that there is almost always someone watching you, when in sheep country. I don't care how far back and remote you think you are.
And for the guy that has the Kahona's, pulls the trigger and is right by 1/32nd (a friend of mine watched an 18yr old do it). I can't say I'm happy for you, cause there is no way you could tell 1/32nd at 200yds. I respect much more the hunter, that chooses he isn't certain, and therefore doesn't pull the trigger.
Let's play nice out there.

If it's not in profile you can't make the call, I could have predicted all the comments following this picture lol.

I agree on all your points. Especially about the reward. It ain't a meat hunt. Worst meat out there. Nobody eats 6 - 10 year old beef.

Sounds like sour grapes to me and you and your partner made the wrong call on the hill.
I find it pretty hard to believe that you know better what’s a legal ram through a spotting scope then a CO at arms length.
So let’s get this straight.....this guy shot an illegal ram by mistake and walked up to it and still thought it was legal, packed it out instead of turning and walking away, registered and got it plugged by a CO that also mistakenly thought it was legal, then took it to a taxidermist who also mistakenly thought it was legal and kept it on his premises/didn’t turn the guy in but instead he mounted it etc etc ......but you know better then everybody else on the mountain from 700 yards away then the 1/2 dozen people that had their hands on it in the chain of custody...gotcha!!🙄

West o5 it happens. Once it’s plugged wether it’s short or not the taxidermist is fine to mount it. That ram in the photo might squeak by but I would definitely let it live another year.

That ram was probably not 4/5 curl when photographed, and probably Will be 4/5 curl before the season closes.
I counted 30-40 rings as well. I'll guess seven years old and some of the best eating if taken before November.

We had 10 days in up North. Enough rams to be found, but only one that was close to legal! Hiking in on the 29th we bumped into 2 people with rams. A beautiful 8.5 year old and a young lady with her first ram!! I haven't seen too many people sharing pictures yet though.

You just have to read these threads to see why most are not posting pics...
And why some of the old contributors to this site are not even on here anymore.
Its a shame but its reality!
Best of luck to you all.
