Post Which type of set up / line should i use with my rod??

I want to know if i can exceed the line rating of the rod? Mine is 6 to 14 pounds rating but is it only for mono??. Can i go with 15 or 20 braid line? Or it will break the rod..?

Sorry i am new at fishing!! What would be the best set up for you for a uglystik elite rod 7 feet Medium and fast action? I planned to buy a penn battle 2 2500 reel (max drag of 12.5 pound) and put 10 pound line .. the thing is can i go more than that ? Would you go with a 3000 reel instead of 2500? 3000 reel have a 15 pound max drag. But rod line rate is 6 to 14.. it confuse me alot lol

I am looking for a good reel which can be use in saltwater as well but don't want to pay alot alot. For sure the rod would be a uglystik elite 7 feets medium fast action 2 pieces, that said, a 3000 reel is it to big and heavy for that?

I plan to fish some different kind of species, looking to have a set up good for overall...

Thanks for your answer!!

3000 series isn't too big at all for the rod you mention. You can go with a higher pound test than 14, but I would go with a braid. The higher you go, the less line you'll be able to fit on the reel. I'm not sure I'd recommend a 3000 series for saltwater, unless the targeted species are quite small.

Wink reel

does it worth it to go with a 3000 instead of a 2500 just to have a max drag increase of 3 pounds . 2500 max drag is 12 pounds and 3000 is 15 pounds. for sure 3000 is heavier but not alot more... just want to make sure that there a good balance.

spec of PENN battle 2 2500:

Mono Capacity yd/lb 255/6 175/8 140/10

Braid Capacity yd/lb 240/10 220/15 160/20

Bearing Count 6

Max Drag lb 12lb | 5.4kg

Gear Ratio 6.2:1

weight: 10.30 oz

__________________________________________________ ________

spec for PENN battle 2 3000:

Mono Capacity yd/lb 200/8 165/10 120/12

Braid Capacity yd/lb 250/15 180/20 130/30

Bearing Count 6

Max Drag lb 15lb | 6.8kg

Gear Ratio 6.2:1
weight: 12.30 oz

do the size of the reel will affect the sensibility of the rod alot ? I mean I want to be able to feel the smaller fish as well

I target species like

rainbow trout, brook trout, Small Mouth bass, striped bass, maybe salmon overall species that kind of big ...

thanks for your help

Go with the 3000, you get more drag capacity as well as extra line capacity. That rod will handle the extra line weight. I have the same rod and you can bend the tip all the way to the handle without it breaking. This was my pike rod for many years, a 3000 sized shimano spooled with 20 lbs powerPro. If you do get into salmon fishing, you may want to go up to a 4000 series sized reel and heavier line as they can put up a real fight.

I bought a penn battle 2500 and while I love the reel I wish I had gone to the 3000 just for the extra line capacity. The 2500 is better if you have small hands, as evidenced by the fact that my wife loves it too and now refers to it has her reel.

I spooled mine (now hers) with 20lb power pro slick 8. I didn’t think I could like anything more than original power pro, but I got the slick 8 on sale and it’s so smooth through the guides.

Go with the Nasci 3000 instead of the 2500 if you're going shimano. You get a more ergonomic paddle handle, a few pounds more drag for some reason, and its physically the same size as the 2500. Only real difference is the depth of the spool so you get more line capacity.

I'm not sure on the rods. In my opinion, if you're casting a lot, especially for saltwater, the longer rod is the better option. If you're willing to get into that $100 range, you should be able to find a really good 7' MF action graphite rod.

As for the reel and line, #2 without a doubt.

The NASCI is a great reel (updated Symetre) that has the XShip and is fully saltwater rated. The 2500 and 3000 reels are the same physical size, both weigh 8.8 oz's, and both are rated for 20 lbs of drag force, however, there are some key differences. The 3000 size reel has a different handle, about 25-30% more line capacity, and higher 6.2:1 gear ratio (2500 is 5.0:1). My preference is the 2500, but if you do a lot of casting, or saltwater is definitely in your plans, then the 3000 is likely the better choice for you.

PowerPro SuperSlick is incredibly strong and long lasting, it casts a mile, and maybe best of all, it's silent through your guides when reeling.

Be sure to go to The Fishin Hole Wall to Wall sale next week. You'll be able to save some serious cash, or better yet, spend the same amount of cash and walk out with a much better rod/reel combo.

You should look at the eyelet material that the line will make contact with. If it is plastic, stick with mono (braid will cut thru plastic eventually), if it is metal you can run with braid.

As others have also mentioned, I'd also go with Power Pro (20lbs) as mainline with a few feet of mono (4lbs-12lbs) for leader depending on what you are targeting.

Haven't ran a Penn before so I stay on the side on that one. Spare spools are good to have to allow quick set-up changes.

Ok so first of all reels. I prefer Shimano so my choice would be the Nasci over the Battle. To me they are made with higher quality materials and are smoother reels. They have stronger drag too, not that drag matters that much since you will likely never use more then 5 or 6 lbs of drag anyways.

One thing to note is that Penn and Shimano 2500 series reels are not the same size. A Penn 2500 series has roughly the same capacity as a Shimano 3000.

Now for capacity, here in AB a 2500 series is more then enough as is 15 lb line. For something to use in SW you probably want a 3000 series and 20 lb line. 3000 series comes with a different handle style which some people like and some people don't so that is worth looking at to see what you think. 2500 and 3000 shimano reels are the same size and pretty much the same weight, the only difference is a higher capacity spool.

Not sure what kind of saltwater you were thinking of but a 3000 series Nasci with 20 lb power pro would work as light salmon gear, inshore fishing in Florida(redfish, seatrout, snook etc) and very light nearshore fishing.

For line I would definitely go with power pro super slick, it is far superior to spider wire. A 150 yard spool of 15 lb power pro super slick fills up a 2500 series Shimano almost perfectly. Similarly a 150 yard spool of 20 lb power pro super slick fills a 3000 series Shimano.

I have never seen or used an Abu Garcia Vendetta but I would probably go with the Ugly Stik Elite instead. I prefer 7' over 6'6 in most situations as you get a bit more casting distance and the rod fights the fish more. If you plan on doing SW fishing you want a rod that is rated for SW, I don't think either are but the Ugly Stik does use stainless steel guides and I know some people use them in SW. Medium power will get the job done here in AB but will be on the light side for most SW fishing so a MH may be worth looking at/considering.
