Spark arrestor for wood stove in wall tent

I have always used a wire spark arrestor at the top of the stovepipe in my wall tent. Last week I didn't put it in as I set up camp in the dark and was tired after a ride in, thinking no big deal. Tent now has 8 holes in it each 1/4-1/2" diameter in the roof. Tent was used for 5 seasons without ever a hole in it before. Don't underestimate the utility of the wire spark arrestor and lesson learned I guess. Any of you guys experienced the same thing?

Did the same thing, now have a spark arrestor. Seal the holes with silicone, no patch required, no leak, and has stayed for 3 yrs now.

I’ve always just used a china cap and never had a problem the one I have dosnt have mesh it’s just slotted on the sides.

This is the glue I used to fix canvas tents while I was in the army.


Use a canvas patch and this stuff, will never leak. use baby powder on any exposed glue after you are done are it will stay sticky.

I got sick of using a spark arrestor and having it plug up. This year I just used a rain cap and I noticed many small holes burned in my fly.

I always use a fly over the tent as well, saved my bacon a couple of times. Lots of smoke pipe height helps as well.

What do you use for a fly? When I have time, I usually just use a $5 CDN tire tarp and cut out a hole for the pipe. Is there better?

We have a 20'x20' blue tarp with the hole cut in for the stove. When we fire up the stove, it will adjust itself and make it the appropriate size..

My last stove we didn't use the spark arrestor, and had a few holes in the tarp/fly. This year we have the spark arrestor and cleaned it out a couple of times.. I had a rain cap laying around that I got crimped to fit inside the top section of pipe. I may look at adding some screen to it, so that I can use it next fall..

About what I use, but works well enough. I also made a spark arrestor out of 1/2 " hardware cloth {wire mesh}.

I need to seal my tent and fire proof it anyone know of products I can use and where to get it

I used a spark arrestor one season but it clogged up too. Not hot enough fires I guess. I then went with just a rain cap the next season.

But I didn't like the idea of sparks going everywhere so I went and bought a roll of screen door mesh. I take a 2 ish ft section, wrap it around the rain cap and down to the pipe. 2 screws with a small washer hold it in place. I have a big blue tarp over the tent for a fly. The heat passes through the mesh fine, just warps it, it don't look pretty but actually holds the sparks in the mesh until they burn out and fall as ash onto the tarp. No holes yet.

Screen door mesh is too fine, it will just plug up with soot, also a lot of it is non metallic. Stuff I settled on is 1'/4 " square

Where did you find the mesh? I've looked a little down here, but am thinking it'll be on a trip to the city..

My spark arrester plugged up too so I took it off and it turns out that the 2 baffles that I built into my barrel stove seen to prevent sparks from leaving the stove. Baffles might be your solution.
