Default Young Man’s First Black Bear

I was pleased to share my bear stand and bait with a young man I’ve known for a few years now.
He helped get the bait up and running, packing in loads of bait, and asking all the right questions. You know, how do you know how big a bear is? Where should I shoot a bear? How hard are like bears to kill? Which gun should I use? Can I use one of your rifles?

We had a quick range session with my BLR in .358Win, and the 200gr. Hornady Spire Points were shooting right where they should.

I sent him loads of anatomical information on where bears vitals are.

The bait was set.

And the first couple nights he sat with the Pit Boss because I was tied up with work, and of course nothing....... despite good trail cam pics.

Then I went and sat with him.

And again nothing!(who wants to get a bear on their first few sits anyways?)

So we went again.

And true to form....... NOTHING! (Now I gotta wonder)

Then it rained and snowed, and access pretty much sucked, so we waited.
Then I had to work outta town for a week.

Then there was last night.

And long about 9PM it happened.

One and done, at 42 yds, he missed the shoulder but the bear went maybe 60 yds.

The rest they say are nothing but great memories.

Play off beard

I don’t have to be clean shaven for work, so why waste money on razors or blades?
It’s also bad luck to shave while into the hunt. You should see my version of no shave November.

Listen at 2:27 to this clip, it pretty much explains the scruff.
