Default Sheep/Mountain Guns

I am in the process of building a mountain gun on a Remington Model 7. It is chambered in 300 SAUM (I know its big for sheep, but I like 300's) Just looking for any idea's or suggestions for people who have been there, done that.

So Far I am going with: Wildcat stock, Talley Lightweights, Skeletonizing Bolt, bolt handle and knob. Gre-Tan Lightweight firing pin assembly and bolt shroud. Also will most likely be looking at slabbing the action and going with a Timney trigger.

Don't bother with all the slabbing and such unless you're doing it solely for looks. You"ll save less than they weight of the Talley's. Use the money on something more worth while. Buy time you're done you'll spend $600 on removing less that 2oz of metal.

Is the action and barrel trued? You're cartridge choice is great and a #2 22" with short shank barrel would be great on that setup.

I did a .284 in a Wildcat with 22" Apex barrel about #2 in profile a few years ago and with a spiral fluted bolt and talley's it weighed 5lbs 3oz.

I have done the custom thing several times
Got a few nice light wieght guns.
Best was a Remington 7 in 308 with a wildcat.
But now i run a kimber adrionidak it weighs less and cost me less
Just my 2 cents

I hear ya. Not a cheap undertaking by any stretch. I have always wanted to build a gun, and it looks like now is the time. I have had a couple kimber Montanas and they don't fit me very well. Nice to pack around though. I have not been a huge remington fan, but after all the research it seemed like this made the most sense for what my end goal is.

"right around" can mean a lot of different things. Many people claim weights by what it feels like, not what a scale shows. I don't want to argue, but there is no way a m7 with a 25.5" barrel (and that much shank) is 5lbs.

A factory m7 with no shank, a pencil weight barrel that's 20" in a 19oz (finished weight) wildcat weighs more than 5lbs by a couple ounces. After slabbing, fluting the bolt, skeletonizing the handle and knob and adding a alloy shroud it will be just a hair under 5lbs.

I'm not sure of the contour... it is the factory remington barrel with the magnum contour. It is a bit heavier than I was hoping for, but it is a good starting point. I have not had the action and barrel trued yet. I wanted to get everything done and if needed re-barrel at that point with the proper contour barrel. I heard a lot of stories that spook me a bit from fluting a factory barrel. I just got the Gre-Tan firing pin assembly tonight, and barreled action I am sitting at 4.7 pounds. Barrel length is 22" and it had a break on it when I got it. It is minimal for weight, will see how it goes ones I get to shoot it.
