25-06 noise

Good day all. Am looking at buying a rifle to start my son out with. Was looking at the Ruger Hawkeye yesterday in the new stainless/synthetic. Like the new stainless much better than the old, new has a matt finish instead of shiney. Have narrowed the selection to .25-06(24"bbl) - .260(22"bbl) - or 7-08(22"bbl). I have heard that the .25-06 is fairly loud to shoot. Anyone have comments on this?

No louder than any other rifle I don't think. They all make a loud bang.

I think you heard wrong. No different than any other centerfire of similar size.

Yah i would also have to say they are no louder then any other gun around that cailbre.

When my little girl gets old enough to hunt I'll start her off with a 308. Its big enough for elk and moose ,very accurate and with a good recoil pad should also be comfortable to shoot. As far as noise with the .25-06 its one of the quiter guns, but there all loud. A good set of ear muffs will help.

Preceived muzzle blast is a function of barrel length.
The shorter the barrel the closer the muzzle is to the shooter so the muzzle blast may be seen as being worse. 2" makes a big diffrence. Most likely why Dark Wing's daughter thought the 308 was louder.(22' or less vs. 24' or more)
Lets face it if you burn over 30 gr's of powder and regardless of the size of bullet they all make one heck of a loud noise.
To tell which makes a louder noise is pointless.

the quarter bore is excellent cartridge for 90% of alberta.
