Default Highlander Hunting talks with a Biologist

I have been listening to hunting podcasts straight for the past year and the last two episodes of Highlander Hunting offer the best material I have run across anywhere.

Episodes 41 and 42, they talk with an Alberta biologist involved with making decisions on wildlife management - he is also a hunter.

For fellow newbies, this is gold.

What other hunting podcasts would you recommend listening to?

Highlander is excellent and if you like them you might also like the Hunt Backcountry Podcast.

I thought they did a great job with the interview, basically asked all the questions to address the topics and concerns that come up time and time again on this forum. The guest was also really knowledgeable and a straight shooter.

I second mikeash1976's recommendation of the EXO Hunt Backcountry podcast. It is a commercial podcast from the US, but is very down to earth and low key. All nuts and bolts and very little fluff.

The Eatwild podcast, outta BC, is another favourite of mine as it discusses topics around being an urban, meat hunter. Many of the guests are just average hunters sharing their experiences.

Other ones I listen to in addition into Highlander are Meat Eater Podcast, Eat Wild, Rookie Hunter (based out of BC), I listen to joe organ for a variety of topics but he occaisionally has hunters and the like on his show which turn into good episodes for hunting talk.

I’m gonna give that backcountry one a listen!

Default Thanks

Thanks for the positive feedback guys. We appreciate it.

Grant really knows his stuff, both as a biologist and as a hunter.

More episodes coming.

Also, we'll be having a "Death Hike" type event next summer, late June.
For any of you that listen to the Hunt Backcountry podcast, it will be similar to theirs.
There's currently about a dozen people who'll be joining us and one buddy has volunteered to be our sag wagon guy in the event of an injury that needs evacuation.
I'd suggest if you're the type of person who likes a challenge, you'll enjoy this.
A two day hike, 30KMs each day. A backpack, so carrying your sleeping gear. So you can go light and freeze at night, or go heavier and sleep in comfort!

The point of this event is:
-give us a goal to work toward that keeps us in mountain hunting shape,
-a chance to try out your gear before the season, pack, sleep system, etc,
-meet people who share the same interest,
-See some awesome country.

Shoot us an email if you want to join us and we'll add your name to the list.

All the best for the season.

Looking forward to the hike!

It will be great if it is a bit larger group in case folks want to group up with others at a similar pace!

Yep, that will most likely happen. I'm looking into laying a gps track, or using iHunter to have a route to follow. That way people can travel at their own pace and not get lost.

I also really enjoyed the podcast and am a regular listener.

One thing that kind of surprised me and I found odd was when you guys asked him what WMU he hunted in. I get it, WMU’s can be big and normally I think it’s fine to ask a friend such a thing. But in this gentleman’s case I don’t think he should be asked, and I understand why he didn’t share. There are a lot of listeners and to broadcast where you hunt as a wildlife biologist is just silly. Just my two cents.

Keep up the great work, look forward to hearing more!

Good podcast, some good info there. If you get a chance to talk to him again I’d like to find out what srd considers recovered grizzly population as he seemed quite careful to say that it’s recovering. A few more questions would be about how they estimate sustanace hunting harvest as to the best of my knowledge there isn’t any tool in place to do that. The other thing that I’d like to hear him talk about is predator control due to the increase in predation
