Default Dodge hemi engine light. 4x4

Hi, looking for advice for my friend in Calgary.
2012 dodge hemi 4x4. 130,000 km
Engine light came on. Engine is running rough.
He took it to a mechanic. Mechanic saw code
8 and 9. Friend not exact sure of those codes.
Mechanic changed
cam shaft sensor and crankshaft sensor.
No change. Mechanic thinks timing chain might
have jumped a cog. And wants to take that apart
for $1100 dollars. Maybe my friend should take it
to a dodge shop in Calgary?
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

There’s the issue right there, Take it to red deer😁
Seriously though I would get a second opinion as it could be something very simple but than again I don’t know a dodge any better than a ford. I’m guessing dodge runs a rubber band for a timing chain

that is not enough information, the code will be a PXXXX. If you have that number people might be able to help you.

The timing chain is a chain

You guessed wrong. It's a chain.

I would have a Dodge Dealer read the code , but this is what mine was. It was idling rough and hesitated when you stepped on it. If your timing chain/belt jumped a cog or two you would likely smack a piston with a valve pretty quick.

Code PO108.

Just went through a similar problem on my 2011 Ram with a 5.7 Hemi.
Turned out to be a broken valve spring.
This is a common problem on the earlier hemi's.
Do a google search and you'll find lots of info on the problem.

Dodge products have a self check to pull the code.
With the vehicle off, quickly turn the key on (not start) and off 3 times , the third time leave it in the on position. The code should pop up on the center screen.

The code is P0016 - Crankshaft-Camshaft Timing Misalignment Bank 1 Sensor 1
He is taking to a dodge dealership for a second opinion.
The mechanic even recommended that.
Thank you everyone for the info.

Sounds like the mechanic is on the right track. I wouldn't bring the truck in for a diagnosis as they will charge additional and really screw you. Have them just replace the timing chain as it is a fixed cost.

Default p0016

Tests/Procedures: 1. Check the Engine Oil quality and quantity. 2. Check the operation of the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Oil Control Valve (OCV) with the actuator tests, then check the tip end for sludge build-up...
119 Confirmed fixes

66 fixes - Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Oil Control Valve (OCV)

with the vvt valve there is a very fine screen that gets plugged up and causes all kind of problems the first thing they tell us is to change eng oil.and then continue diagnosis.

i love customers like you, when you think you know but you don't i can put your guess in then you still get to pay me diagnosis to figure out whats actually wrong with it. you screw yourself then call the shop thieves.

I was hoping it was just a broken valve spring when my 2011 hemi acted up last summer, but it turned out to be a badly worn camshaft lobe on one cylinder.
A considerably more expensive problem to fix.
As KnifeFan007 said, check google as both things seem to be relatively common events.

I would save myself the headache and take it direct to a dealership first.

We see people “YouTube mechanic” things first, and then we get to fix the real problem when the google diagnosis doesn’t fix it.

Then, we get called thieves when they get charged twice to fix a problem that we would have nailed right off the hop.

Google and a buddy who says he's a "mechanic" isn't the best thing with newer vehicles and the new electronics and engine controls. Take it to someone competent "technician" or the dealer. Don't get sucked in on unesesary repairs that won't fix the underlying problem. I've been in the trade long enough and seen enough to know that a competent tech can figure out and diagnose these types of things. A backyard mechanic was absolete around 96 when obd2 came into effect for lots of electrical work. Hell I remember working on Bosch k and j jetronic injection systems and I'm only 34. Point is to take it and have it diagnosed properly!
