Default First trip of the new season

Where will you be.....
I will be at a irrigation Res. that I have never fished for whites before. Heard through the grapevine from a conservation officer that the whites are stacked at the dam there in May, June. Looking forward to fishing the dam face for my first trip out. Will be fly fishing, although the pike gear is going with.

Hopefully get out the fly rod and do more exploring around Nordegg. Shunda and other streams in the area are fun for brookies and browns. Been up to Allstone a couple of times but I don’t like leaving my vehicle by Abraham lake anymore so I might just pass on that one. Hopefully the plague is gone by the time that area opens up.

As long as I can be in my boat on any lake. I will be a very happy man. Would be a bonus if my grandson could come only.

For open water probably the same as every year, start out fly fishing for trout and rockies in a river that's open. Usually started on that by now but she's been a little chilly. Still ice fishin.

May 15 lake opener for most pike/walleye lakes lands on days off so definitely going to be on a local lake looking for eyes. That is if the ice is off by then lol. Rest of that weekend hard at er trapping leeches for use the rest of the season.

Hey there Jr. Do you keep your leeches in an aquarium or keep them cold in the fridge and docile. Any info on long term storage and if you feed them or not would be great if you care to share. I get my own minnows. Spring is great for that too.

I’ll look for some goldeyes destined for the smoker on the river, or maybe some big pike in RHR. Not sure yet!

Docile in the fridge in tupperware containers. I still have some from last year waiting to get dunked opening day. I find changing the water out once a week minimum is the key. Let it go longer than a week and the body count really starts to go up as I found out this winter. Got a little slack on it and I probably have less than half the leeches left as I did years prior. I feed every couple months or so. I understand they can go longer but it's not hard to do just drop some meat in.

Trying to catch the 25lb+ big girl I caught while ice fishing on a rod.

My son swears it was close to 30. She has a distinctive injury on her gill plate so I will know if its the same fish.

I don't think I'll be going anywhere until officials say it's okay to be out there again. Once we do get the go-ahead, I'm looking forward to hitting Newell for big walleye this summer.

I agree, I'm not sure at this time that any campgrounds or boat launches will open until September. If the pandemic high point is mid May, very little will open until at least August and I wonder if they will staff the capgrounds etc. for a couple of months.

Thanks for the reply bud. I'm all over it. I always lost quite a few and probably a little negligence on my water is what did it.👍

Could be although the premier did suggest that the strict social distancing is most probable to carry to the end of may. Whether campgrounds and launches will open after that is to be seen I guess.

Naw just a great wife. With that said a poor fitting lid resulted in some going for a tour one time. I got them cleaned up and the problem fixed, wife wasn't exactly happy about it I'll say. Got the problem fixed and it hasn't happened again. She likes to catch fish to though, and leeches are great bait so she forgave me.

Maybe an opportunity for a little P.S.A. - make sure the lid on your container mates tight. Little buggers can squirm through pretty tiny openings and they really try getting out the first few days until they settle down.
