Thumbs up Little secret

Ok so I have been doing this for years, gonna share it, it works....poke around the deer woods, not just off the highway or back road, Kinda off the beaten trail.
Find old sign from previous years that indicates buck activity, rubs....now find a licking stick or bend one into place at about the 3 1/2' to 4 ' height. Grab a stick and tear up the ground....here is the kicker drop a few dabs of doe urine I use tinks69 synthetic crap, a few dabs on the licking stick too make a few more 10'yards away then stick up a game cam or two....

Letting the cams soak for two, weeks before heading back out to see what's happening....another tactic.....don't wonder around too much....in.....out....set up....on target area....hopefully he shows up.....that's hunting.

Trying to locate this fella from last year, he was a pass, maybe not this year, might be a huge big 8.
image.jpg
Use the same tactic above to get this fella in, never seen him before, so a mock scrape and some wonder juice and he comes poking around....

Making a scrape works well, I just find an appropriate branch for a licking branch, scrape the leaves away underneath and take a whizz in it. The bucks will do the rest.

I have little trick that has worked a handful of times. It's a bit of work but it pays off if its your only chance to quietly sneak into your spot or where the animals are bedded/hanging out..

A few years ago I found numerous beds that were about 100 yards from my stand. The only problem was that the wind was constantly blowing my scent towards the beds. I moved the stand to the game trail on the other side of the bushes the beds were in and the deer would still not come. I monitored the tracks on the trails taking note of how many there were and direction each morning and evning and noticed they seemed be mostly nocturnal.

I came up with a hair ball idea and its worked great every time, so far. My plan was to sneak in to the bush with my bow and get these deer in or around there beds during the day. As mentioned before they were not coming out (I tried numerous, scents and calls.) The beds were in a little grassy area with no trees and a small area of water, there were content. I decided that I'd use the game trail that would put the wind in my favor. But sneaking in was not going to happen since there were way too many leaves, sounded like walking on corn flakes. I went there at night when the deer were gone and literally raked the leaves from the game trail right to the beds. Took about 30 mins of raking. I figured either it would scare them off or it would maybe work. Worth a shot right? 2 days later I walked in there mid day and snagged a doe.

Since then I've religiously pruning my trails and stand area for easy ins and outs. The animals don't seem to mind one bit.

On a side note, I've noticed the the coyotes actually prefer the quiet trails as well. Now when coyote hunting i'll clean a preferred trail ahead off time, it usually works out when calling the coyotes come right down the trail that I cleaned. They want a quiet entry and I set up waiting on that spot.

To add little interdigital gland lure in scrape and pre-orbital lure on licking branch works. To save money and start alot of scrapes buy qt jug of cleaning ammonia in walmart mix in one bottle buck lure. Rake out a number of scrapes along last years line of scrapes and splash some in each. Urine breaks down in part to ammonia and attracks their attention,
Expand a licking branch into a field. If you hunt field edges with deer feeding in field go out about 20 yds into field from your stand. Cut a tree about 12-15 ft high with branches about 4 feet off ground. Dig a narrow hole and place tree in and pack it down so it stays standing. Make a mock scrape below tree on your stand side and add your scent of choice. When deer come into field and see that lone tree standing out in field all by its lonesome they will come to investigate it and work scrape. Just make sure to remove tree at end of your hunt
Gord.

Mock scrapes are great but if you can find a major scrape the deer made all the better. I've gotten pics of 4 different bucks on one major scrape in a 48 hour period. All were sniffing the overhead scent branch. Deer have a gland near the eye that they rub on the branch to leave their essence so the overhead branch is sort of a community branch.

Right before rut and during...from the major ground scrape a person can find the minor scrape line the bucks make. Around Central Alberta the air currents and winds are predominantly from the NW. Scrape lines will be made perpendicular to the usual winds and most of the time the bucks will be bedded or staying on the downwind side of the scrape during rut to catch a whiff of any passing doe. Does will visit the ground scrapes too. There could be minor ground scrapes every 50 or 100 yards during rut. Even in the snow. Always watch the downwind side of a scrape line carefully.

On Wednesday I was sitting in my tree stand and watched 4 diffrent buck work their scrap line. I am thinking of placing a ground blind on the east side of this trail for when the wind comes from the west. I hope this plan works as I watch one big buck bed down for 2hr mid day. It is a good thing to have. I think I am going to have to go in af 5am to set up my blind as they are their mid day. Normally between 330 PM and 6 PM.
