1st line. Anything that happened on the McDavid line was a lone effort by McDavid. Nuge looked off and Kassian looked awful

2nd line. Overall looked good. Kahun and Drasaitl were connecting early and it took Yamo about 1.5 periods to get his head screwed on straight. Leave this line alone.

3rd line. Was good and Puljujarvi was engaged

4th. Was ok

I would throw Ennis on the 3rd, Kassian on the 4th and try Puljujarvi on the 1st line tonight.

But Oiler lost for 3 reason last night and it wasn't line combinations

1. Better goaltending
2. Turnovers at the blue line
3. Brutal middle of the ice coverage in our zone.

Oh well, we got it out of our system, better night tonight.

Even Colorado got waxed last night by the Covid ridden Dallas Stars.

Colorado played the Blues. Dallas I don't think plays till like the 19th due to their problems.

I had 4-2 Canucks going into this game. We always seem to come out flat against them early in the season. The defensive breakdowns... woof.

I thought outside of that there were more good signs than bad. Koekoek made a great impression. Two goals by dmen (that was a huge struggle last year). McDavid and Draisaitl had some real high danger chances and either could have cash one or two. Yamamoto is still one of the hardest working players and his play on his goal was fantastic. Bear played a solid game as well, especially on stopping Horvat on the 1 on 1. Koskinen, hard to judge his performance when his team leaves guys wide open on the kill floor time and time again.

PP also came out really flat but I certainly don’t see it remaining that way. Chiasson buries one of his multiple PP chances, McDavid finishes one of his chances and game goes into OT and we all sing a bit different of a tune. That’s hockey!!

On the bright side, at least with no fans at the rink there were no Oiler Jerseys thrown on the ice.

Pretty much agree on everything here. Kassian was terrible last night. Weak on the puck and lazy. Larsson was not much better. He has been in the league long enough not to make boneheaded plays like he did on the first goal.

Chaisson was terrible. Weak on the stick, couldn't make a pass or get the puck out when he did have it. I think it's time for retirement.

JP looked good and engaged. I like the 3rd line. Maybe keep him with Turris for a few more games.

2nd line. Don't touch, looks good.

Koekkoek looked good for his first game with the Oil. Might not see him tonight as Russell might be in.

Weak start, but can make up for it tonight. Need a few more shots from 3rd and 4th lines.

X3.

The nice pass to Nurse aside, Kassian is not long for the first line if he plays like that. McDavid was just a 1/2 second or a 1/2" off, or he'd have had a couple last night. Nuge was just OK, I expect more from him.

Second line was the best line I thought. I can't get enough of Yamo, I sure hope he can keep up that pace for 56 games. Draisaitl was his usual self, and I'm pleasantly surprised with Kahun, I think he could be a very good pickup.

Agree on the 3rd line. I'd leave it as is. JP was good overall, had some bad plays, had some good plays, but he was engaged. I'd like to see him use that huge frame a little more. Turris is going to be OK, an upgrade at 3C for sure. Archibald was quiet last night, but I'd give him some more leash. I'd consider swapping him out for Neal when he's ready though.

The 4th line was woeful. I sure wish Khaira would have been claimed off of waivers, he has no business being in the lineup. I'd take Shore, Haas, or live with the McLeod rookie growing pains all day everyday over him. Chiasson was bad too, really fighting it, and poor Ennis was a man on his own.

Larsson was decent last night, generally good in his own end and managed to score a rare goal. The play to give up a goal was a grade A bonehead move, he MUST be better than that. I thought Jones played well overall, still figuring it out a bit though.

Nurse and Bear are good, but calling them a true #1 pairing is a bit of a stretch. They're going to have to be though.

Pretty happy with the Koekoek signing. I'm on the fence about Barrie. Moves the puck well, but I can see that his rep for his own end not being his happy place is earned. The PP looked awful last night, but I won't panic yet, they'll get it lined out.

I'd say Koskinen was way better than his save percentage will say he was. He made a lot of key saves and was in good position all night. When you face a half dozen guys at point blank with all day to shoot, it's not gonna end well for the goalie most times.

No doubt that defensive play at 5V5 cost them the game. Disappointing considering all the preseason talk about stressing team defense. I sure as heck didn't see it, especially from the forwards. VAN plays VERY solid team defense, it's frustrating to watch and must be frustrating to play against. It's very effective.

Here's hoping for a much better result tonight. Smith with the start, haven't heard any other lineup tweaks yet. (PLEASE take Khaira out!)

And who would you suggest teaches the number one player in the world ?

Cutting to the front of the net with an opposing players hacking and whacking at you is hardly a breakaway.

Maybe he should learn to score on those breakaways with someone hacking and whacking at him. We’ll see him get some better puck luck tonight. Go Oil Go!
