down jacket
Does anyone make a down jacket with a tough outer layer
My old cabellas lasted 15 years with hard use before it was thread bare and a few holes. I looked but they do not make it anymore.
So I replaced it with a Eddie Bauer puffy jacket which for me is not good
It already has a few holes and is not that warm of a jacket. Put it in the wash machine on gentle and the wash machine was left with many feathers. I do not want a jacket that is so thin it can roll up easily so you can carry it in a small sack. I do not mind stuffing the jacket in a pack.
thanks for any insight

Most of the down jackets I own, are not that durable these days but keep me warm, so I add a canvas durable outer jacket to save my inner down jacket when working around the shop/garage

X 2...
I found a heavy nylon slicker jacket at Value Village for $5 that I wear over my down coat.
Much easier to wash the slicker than my down coat.

Get one of those Canada goose jackets
Most of the down jackets today are made to be layered under a shell
They are mostly mountaineering style jackets and designed to be ultra light

Yep, majority are made to be UL and very packable.
I have the heavy Cabelas down vest that they sold 15 years ago, so I can see where you would be disappointed in the durability and warmth of a new style one.
Sorry, I don't have any advice for where to find one.

Filson makes a Down Cruiser that might be suitable: 8-oz. 100% cotton oil finish Cover Cloth + 11-oz. 100% cotton oil finish Shelter Cloth + 650-fill-power goose down + nylon lining + 100% wool collar lining
https://www.filson.com/men/outerwear...-fco-007558512
As others have mentioned, the majority of the current selection of down jackets is geared towards packable ultralights; which are susceptible to damage. If you want tough, and are willing to layer, look at combining a quality puffy down jacket under something like the Filson Tin Cloth jacket of choice. Tin Cloth will withstand just about anything.

Down jacket with an over jacket is a good idea I guess.
Or hit the thrift stores, they’re full of used down jackets.
I’ve got an $800.00 helly Hansen jacket that doesn’t fit me. If you’re 5’6” and 160 lbs it sure will.

It seems that all of these companies are selling cheap inferior doesn’t last products. I was going thru my hunting stuff recently and I am finding old Cabelas hoodies and coats from 20 yrs ago that are still in decent condition. One hoody I have had Made in Canada on the label. Eddie Bauer was my go to store but it’s turned it’s back on its traditional product and is now a rainbow and unicorn store. No more shirts with Hunting Labs in there anymore. I do like to send them the odd pic while wearing something with an Eddie Bauer name on it with me holding a dead bird of some sort to them. I like to remind them of their heritage. I’m fairly certain that there is a good market for an enterprising young person to make a good solid product for a decent price here in western Canada and Northwestern US.

I think that the problem with quality and affordability is that if your only selling one coat to each customer every 25 years you are not in business long. You’ll never get a customer coming back. The very second that word goes out that the product is good quality goes down and price goes to max profits and ensure repeat business. Toss on a lifetime warranty that most buyers never use and your golden. This sums up today’s market place.

Sitka has a Kelvin Down WS jacket. The WS stands for Wind Stopper and this jacket has a lot more durable and rugged outer later.

Someone on this forum said go to Costco and buy one of those 50$ puffy down jackets stuff it into your pack, hike in to your spot, throw it on, then a lite camo layer over that. Sit down and hunt, that's exactly what I do.

I couldn't tell you exact models (because I've had mine long enough they don't make it anymore) but I would suggest checking out Snugpak jackets.
I think most are synthetic instead of down but I can attest to their warmth and durability. Mine has survived many years of hard use in the field and bush and is still going.

Kluane Mountaineering in Edmonton makes incredible down gear.
Take a look, you won’t be disappointed.

down jacket
Does it need to be down? There are some good synthetic options on the market depending on what your chasing. I’ve got a kifaru lost park parka and it’s bloody warm, light, packs up small and is tough enough I didn’t rip it in the couple years I used it in Alberta. My only complaint about that jacket is that it needs to be cold or you have to be sitting around to be able to wear it. If it wasn’t bloody cold or I was moving at all I couldn’t wear it cause it was to hot. When it was cold and I was moving I would just unzip the front to keep myself from overheating.
A pic of it with the little man staying warm.
