Default Powder stuck on muzzleloader bore

I went to clean my muzzleloader the other day and after cleaning it I looked down the barrel and noticed that there was still some powder stuck on the bore @ about the last 5 inches of the barrel & it won't come off. Anyone know how to get this stuck powder off?

are you sure its powder or just soot? i had some skudge like that once. a little butchs bore shine....let it soak for a bit.....brass brush. a little scrub and it was gone. another tip ive found great for muzzy cleaning is a can of brakleen. it works awesome for breechplugs, and leaves zero residue.

Ideally, you should clean a black-powder firearm the same day you fire it. Black powder is rich with highly corrosive salts that cling to the inside of the barrel, and the more you fire the gun, the more the salts build up. The salts draw moisture from the air, so they begin to cause corrosion on the inside of the barrel almost immediately. The most thorough way to clean a black-powder gun barrel is by removing the barrel from the receiver and using a cleaner designed for black powder.

Bore Tech 16 oz Black Powder Solvent.

Butch's Black Powder Bore Shine

Hope that helps you.

No I'm not sure it is powder or soot... I guess it would probably be soot now that you mention it....I tried hops #9 foaming agent , also used my breech brush to try and get it off. I might give that breakclean a try, and clean it afterwards with solvent. Thanks Dale

I realize it is very corrosive ... I bought the gun used . The bore was coated in bore butter ... So I just left it in there from the day I bought the gun, which is no problem ... But yesterday I was bored and decided to give it a good cleaning ... That's when I noticed the residue ... I originally cleaned it with t/c t17 ... Once I noticed the residue i tried to get it off with my breech plug brush that didnt work ... So off I went down to the local gun store they suggested this hops#9 foaming agent , than I tried the breakclean thing .. Nothing won't get it off ... WTF

All I ever used for cleaning my old black powder was hot soapy water, then oil afterwards, but if brakekleen won't get rid of it, then I doubt the soapy water will either.

what kind of gun did you get DT? is it scoped? ill tell you what is fun as heck and real cheap is to pick up a box of roundballs and a can of pyrodex. smacking gophers with a muzzy is about as fun as it gets. i still think my bow is number one, but id rate the front stuffer number 2 for gopher blasting.

hot boiling water and vinegar mixed usually does the trick for black powder or black powder substitutes,
and lots of patches

I wouldn't put bore butter back in it! Possibly a very thin coat of oil if it's to be stored for a long period of time but a dry/clean barrel is best.
