Default kelly kettle for backpacking

Has anyone used one in place of the small back packing gas stoves?

I have seen other people use them. They get sticky with spruce and pine tar from the cones.

you're talking about the hollow kettle with the little fire underneath it? i have one of those. it works great for making a pot of tea, but i wouldnt think it would replace a stove. i've only used it as a novelty on outings down to the river.

I would never use a Kelly Kettle for backpacking...in fact I wouldn't use one at all other than out of fleeting interest at some day park or similar.

That is just my oppinion.

I have owned a Kelly Kettle and it was an impulse buy cause I am a gear *****...

You can do a lot better for the $$$

I love my kettle. Having it along anytime I'm out I always know I'll have safe water to drink as long as I can start a fire. You can use it as a stove as well, you can get a pot holder unit that sits on top so you can cook at the same time as you boil your water. I've only used mine for making a hot drink on a cold day though so not sure how well you can cook on it...
