How many Trappers know that trapping in Alberta is a RIGHT and not a privilege?

I keep hearing that we have to do this and we have to do that in order to preserve trapping in Alberta for future generations. That’s Total BS and only a way to manipulate trappers through fear mongering. The government has already passed legislation to ensure the future of hunting, fishing and TRAPPING in Alberta.

“THEREFORE HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, enacts as follows:

Right to hunt and fish

1(1) A person has a right to hunt, fish and trap in accordance with the law.

(2) The reference to the law in subsection (1) includes the Wildlife Act, the Fisheries Act (Canada), the Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994 (Canada) and the regulations made under those Acts.”

It says "in accordance with the law". If the law changes, your right does also.

Well, of course your right to hunt, fish and trap is limited to doing it lawfully. That’s what that means.

Taking away your right to do any of those things isn’t as easy as, “We could lose trapping with a stroke of a pen.” as has been said as a motivation to go along with someone’s agenda. That’s simply absurd.

In order to repel the Heritage Act it would literally take an Act of Parliament. An MLA would first have to present a Bill to Parliament. They’d have to discuss it and a majority vote would be needed for it to go any further. I’d like to know what party would want to commit political suicide by taking away these rights. Our Provincial Politicians have enough real issues to occupy themselves with besides this non-issue.

Rights are given by men and taken away by men. This Act was in place in ON when I lived there and I mentioned it to the AFGA when I moved to AB in 98... because AB had no such law. The AFGA resolved that fishing/hunting/trapping rights be incorporated into law (an ACT)...and there we are today

They took all the commercial fisheries away Dave how the f u explain that one. At one rendezvous there was a commercial fisherman that did it as a living giving a talk he told us to be aware it can be taken away at any time.

Pretty easy to explain.......Commercial fishing isn't a RIGHT, not even for Natives.

Remember when we used to run coyotes with hounds?

One day some wisenheimer invited a tv crew out to show them how it's done. The public recoiled at the sight of hounds taking down a coyote. The outrage was more than Ralph could stand and almost immediately running coyotes with hounds was illegal.

We no longer have a NDP government. In my opinion there is more common sense now, less knee jerk reaction to minority opinion. The Act you mention is less than 2 years old and was introduced by the UCP.

Nope.

The Hunting, Fishing and Trapping Heritage Act was passed and brought into legislation on May 15, 2008 approx 6 months after PC Premier Ed Stelmach was elected.

Talked to a local hounds- man who informed me that they can still run coyotes on private land.
