Is the number of magpies out on the gut piles in the yard. Sure glad I don't live next door to the many killers here on the board as I quite enjoy their antics.

I have a few that come in the yard every now and then. Not enough to go GI Joe on them. I use to worry they would be hard on my song birds in spring, but as soon as the tree swallows show up, not a magpie, raven or hawk dare enter the no fly zone, without the fighter been scrambled.

There is a WT buck carcass and scraps in the parents back yard(where we hang game and cut it up). The magpies have gorged themselves for 2 days now and fewer are coming around. But they will be back & able to feast for a while yet. Might as well, just going to be cut up into smaller pieces, boxed up and tossed anyways. I would guess we had as many as that or maybe a few more when the call first went out for free food. Parents live beside a ravine, surprised no Yote tracks yet.

Default Magpies

If you ever have some magpies nest where you can watch them, you will see them feeding baby songbirds to their own young. Magpies, crows and ravens have their nesting time to take advantage of this food source.

Scavengers, opportunists and down right killers. Poke the eyes out of your dogs
and engage as a gang. Some days we get at least 12 - 14+ in my trees in back yard squawking up a big storm. No food around

You know this is an outdoorsmen site, right? People here own buy sell fix modify and even shoot, if you can believe it, firearms.

Some people have skunks as pets too, but I like songbirds. Magpies

Yep, songbirds in our area were decreasing. Started shooting the magpies and next thing you know we have more songbirds than ever.

I can't afford all the dog food the magpies eat.
They are pretty shy around here...

I was hunting the other day and had my asat leafy suit on.
3 magpies were nearby and I was able to walk right up to them.
I was within 6 feet and they weren’t spooked at all.

That is odd.

I was in Calgary last summer with another couple members, and in the back yard we noticed the same thing. Not skittish at all. I think they are hand fed or know they have no predators other than cats.

Here if you look out the window they are gone like they wee shot out of a cannon.

My brain read that as "Had my asshat leafy suit on"
I am still giggling about it.

Default Magpies

I have seen where they start a hole in the back of a domestic bull and followed him around not letting him graze. The farmer had to keep the bull inside the barn, hauling feed and water when the bull should have been working in the pasture. Had to use a replacement bull. Even put pine tar covering on the sore trying to heal it up. They are quite spooky around here too.

The only thing that will keep the magpies from eating your Tree Swallow eggs and young is proper nest box design. As for the platform and basket nesters you could have in your yard - you are the only protection.

Have seen that with cows myself. Nasty, barbaric birds.

Just some FYI for you

Birds kill 200 lambs on a single Isle of Wight farm. (GRAPHIC)

https://youtu.be/EaMa1WHZOUs

Same bird just different markings then our magpies ..... they will pick the eyes out of new born calves as well.

The number of crows in the Uk is amazing. They don’t migrate there and when they go into their rookeries at night it’s like a black cloud.

We set up some decoys not far from one and had a lot of fun with the shotguns.

I like ravens they keep magpies and crows away from my ranch. Only problem is ravens also kill song birds to feed their young! The 22 keeps mother nature in check!

A few of us do that in our neighbourhood with hides for the ravens, magpies & chickadees. The odd Bald eagle comes by and flies off with them though!

I recall shooting magpies out my bedroom window with a 410 back when I was a kid. Times sure have changed.

Cats have kids though. And adults. It is not their fault their keepers are stupid.
I have never shot 1 but have trapped them while trapping for skunks.

Magpies have a bloodthirst which makes them a valid target.

The OP is just having fun. He is trolling. And he got us.

He kicked in the door, threw gasoline on the pile dropped a grenade and waited for the boom.

He got what he wanted. Well done OP, well done.

Calling for coyotes in our gillies 3 of us side by side. We were sitting on a fence lineline. The guy on my left squeaked to get my attention. He had a magpie sitting on the toe of his boot. His rifle was next to him on a bipod. He had the hood on the ghillie pulled up. It looked like a magpie nest. The bird hopped from the boot to the gun barrel so he could get a look inside the "nest".

Good time to have a pellet pistol with you.

Default They are why Tannerite was made

I love this time of the year. I find a 2 pound pack of tannerite on the rib cage can have fantastic results on the local magpie population. So amusing to hit that jar with the 223 and then count the bodies.
