Default Fencing...

Well was looking at getting about 1 1/2 miles of 4 strand replaced. Checked UFA site but says to call for pricing...

UFA 4 1/4" posts are around $10 a hit if I heard the girl correctly! Can't remember if that was peeled or dowel but....ouch!

Sitting here looking at the 2500 feet of 3 and 4 rail fence i did 2 years ago around our property thinking I could probable rip it all down and make some money on it! I was ****ed at the price when i built it all! Couldn't imagine doing it all now. Think I paid around 4 bucks a post on the 4.25 7 footers at the time.

UFA has both dowel and regular treated fence posts. Dowel more expensive, not necessary if building barb wire fence. Usually used for fancy rail fences.

Price of all wood products is through the roof! Paid $8.50 for 96" 2X4's at home depot last week. Pretty sure that's double or more from a year back.

I almost choked when they wanted close to 60. for a sheet of 3/8 spruce, last week . It can't stay there, but then gas is almost 1.30 .

There's been a couple threads on fencing being done and the expense of posts and wire. I am wondering if anyone has heard of or uses suspension fencing?

I had a UFA farming book from the 60's that had tip sheets on farming. One type of fencing mentioned was suspension fencing. The posts are much taller and more spaced out.

Using 15 to 20 foot tall posts they are spaced out 30 to 50 yards apart. Even up to 100 yards on flat ground. A single heavier cable is run along the top of the posts. Wires are put/suspended every so many yards along the cable and are used to hold and space the strands of barb wire or smooth fence wire. The book suggested that a suspension fence use high tensile smooth wire. If an animal pushes on this kind of fence the fence pushes back and the animals won't challenge the fence as much. They won't get stretched out as easily. You only use 35 or 36 posts to the mile as opposed to 320 posts per mile on a standard barb wire fence. The post spacing wouldn't work on hilly terrain though. I made a pic to illustrate the fence.

Anyone use this type of fencing? Might be a bit cheaper using way less posts. The top cable will cost a bit though.
