How much room do you need? How much timber is on the land? What kind of physical condition are u in? How far off the beaten path is it? How much disposable money do you have to do this? What kind of equipment do you have already? How often will it be used? What kind of facilities to you need? How far away is the nearest electrical and the nearest nat gas tie-in? What permits would you need there?

if I did it again, I'd use timber frame construction with semi-seasoned wood from the property. Maybe steel if that wasn't an option. Full basement and winterization. 1000 ft2, 2 bdrms. Relatively low ceilings for heating efficiency. Solid fuel heat (central masonry Kachelofen) maybe with coal and propane backup, if nat gas unavailable or too expensive. Standing-seam metal roof. Covered work/storage area somewhere. Log construction might be OK for a smaller structure.

That’s money! I’d love a simple cabin exactly like what you posted. D logs on the bottom 4’ of wall and stick framed for top 4’. Little steeper pitch roof for how much snow I get but otherwise exactly the same. Somewhere around 16x24. PLEASE make a thread following the progress of your build!!!!

I might do that. We have to get past the permit malarkey first. Hope to start building mid May.

Not wanting to hijack this thread , let’s see some cabin pics and ideas .

I have a cabin already, and would like to build a bit bigger. This is the type of design I am looking at as well, but with a slightly steeper pitch to the roof to allow a loft on one or both ends. I would also use tin rather than shakes. Not as aesthetic, but durable, and I've done enough roof repairs to last me a lifetime already.
I love the long veranda. We tend to socialize on the front porch more than on the inside, so a long covered area works well.

Fortunately it's on a lake on the sunshine coast, but we do get some killer storms in the winter

Knotty Pines Cabin kit that we built ourselves. Added the overhang as an after thought 4 years after we first built the building.

This is where we spent most of 2020 to get out of the city during the Covid times...

We built a16' by 24' timber frame with 6-12 pitch roof. If I ever build another one, it will look a lot like Immigrant's. Timber frame was fun but a lot of work to finish with exposed beams.

I have been looking for a simple cabin to drop on the farm for several years. Anyone know a good builder up by LLB or Athabasca range?

Default Our cabin

This is our cabin. Built it three years ago and officially finished the interior two weeks ago.
