Default Corrosion resistant finish

Is there any way I can take my Winchester model 70 rifles and give them a corrosion resistant finish? They are currently just blued steel. Is oil my only option?

There are lots of finsishes on the market but for the most part they entail stripping the bluing off.
A coat of oil every now and then is a small price to pay , I would think.
Some of my vintage guns are so worn there is almost no finish left on them, but a quick wipe with G96 takes the day's rust off.

I just had a rifle gunkoted, which is pretty much worry free on the exterior - problem is the bore (the most important part) still needs to be protected.

The best is electroless nickel plating.

I had a few rifles done years ago thru a large plating shop I was dealing with at the time.

I think they went to All-Brite Plating in Edmonton.

It looks very much like stainless but has a very faint yellowish tinge in certain lighting.

They took off the blueing with very fine glass beading so the nickle leaves a satin finish.

There was a guy in Saskatoon doing it also.

It only adds .0005 -.0007 so it's not going to tighten anything up significantly.

That's 5 to 7 tenths of a thou......:-)

There are 700 BDL's in 300 Win Mag and 22-250 out there that I had done, as well as a Weatherby Vanguard in 270 Win. These were plated in '93-'94 ish.

Where did you get the coating work done? Thinking about coating a .250 Savage that I'm currently having built. What was your turnaround time?

Hard chroming also raises a concern on high strength parts.

Wonder how the plating holds up to abrasion tests...

Definitely thin coatings keep things looking good. I've seen some Teflon coatings where the Rem. 700 bolt checkering was filled not to mention other issues. Cerakote at the .001" seems to be nice thickness.

How hard is it to wipe a gun down with an oily rag ? G96 is as easy as it gets. I leave an oily rag in the gun cases all the time for a quick wipe when I get back to the truck.

Do you take the metal out of the stock to wipe it down each time you get in your truck? If oiling your rig works for you, great - the original post asked about other options.

There is an interesting video (bottom right hand side) on the nic industries website comparing several coatings and corrosion resistance. Worth a watch. I guess we picked right back in the early 200x years... Cerakote...
