An antlered antlerless
This year I shot a deer with messed up antlers. He was missing one on one side, and the other side traced along the line of his jaw. I thought he was a big doe, and because I had both antlered and antlerless, I bagged him.
I tagged him as antlered, because the length of the tine was about 15cm.
Was that the right tag to use?

If it had a 15cm antler, the deer was antlered by definition, so an antlered tag is required. But this does remind me of a banned AO member that thought i was okay to use an antlerless tag, because he didn't see the antler.

Thx.
I figured I should do my best to be technically correct.

The specify length, not direction. That's why I used my antlered tag.
I guess it's a stupid question, but it's been on my mind so I thought I'd ask.

Definitely the right tag, 4” isn’t very much. Like you mentioned regardless if it grows up out or down, 4” is 4”.

I still can’t believe the argument that ensued and he was positive that if he saw it as a antlerless and then shot it, then realized it was antlered it was ok to put and antlerless tag on it.
That’s how he read the BC regulations! So he must be right

It sucks but you did the right thing. Here’s a doe I shot back in 2010 that had a weird antler. It would’ve sucked as well if I had to use my general but it wasn’t longer than 4”

I didn't take a pic. It just looked like a piece of dirty fettuccini running down the side of its face/neck. Sorry.

It doesn't really suck. He was pushing 200 lbs, and is quite tasty. I'm totally going to be second-guessing myself when shooting at antlerless in the future, though.
Ya, it was sort of like that, except longer and no velvet.

You shoot deer based on what is on its head, not what is between it legs. That is why it is asinine to tag a deer on the leg.

Wow that would be tough to see when hunting. That would suck if it was 4" and you had already filled your antlered tag.
