Default Mossberg ATR or Stevens/Savage

Got a buddy at work looking for an entry level hunting rifle.
He's torn between the Mossberg ATR, and either the stevens 200 or package deal on a Savage.
I have a Savage and tried to turn him that way, but he finds the "tupperware" stock kind of ugly.
Who has an opinion they'd like to share.
Thanks.

I think you are right to talk him into the Stevens Rifle. They seem to have the better reputation for being accurate right out of the box. (I don't own, nor have ever owned either rifle)

Have a Savage 111fl in 7mm ultra mag. For the price it is a great gun.

Talk him into a savage and pick up a can of textured paint. I just did the same thing for a buddy, except with a Stevens.

I've owned both...neither one has any better of a stock than the other...The stevens I have in 243 is an awesome shooter with handloads..3/4 inch average groups of 3 at 100 yards...the ATR I had in 30.06 was a good shooter too...an inch or or slightly over with factory 165 grain ammo....

But I would sway him to a Stevens or a Savage...the stock is simple to fix up....i used Canadian Tire Spray on bedliner for a textured finish, then I "home camo'd" it....turned out to be pretty good as comapred the factory grey look

Not the best pics but it'll give a bit of an idea
