OK, how many people watch their mouth?

As a kid we used to get our mouths washed out with soap for swearing. Apparently, it didn't have a long term effect. I tend to curse fairly often, although I am pretty good at moderating it in mixed company.

I'm an adult, so yes, some times I have colourful language.
That said,
kids today know more foul language as youths thanks to the internet, than I could ever use or come up with.

The interesting thing about swearing is that there have been numerous study's verifying the corollation between swearing and high intelligence.
Quite the opposite of the traditional school of thought.

Personally I do swear but I also try to watch my tounge in public and among more sensitive types.

Also known as industrial language. Which has stood up in arbitration case where a worker calls a supervisor a @&I(@&* which happens quite frequently on a lot of job sites.

When I was younger I used to swear a lot, and now, depending on the circumstances, I can still swear with the 2nd best. I never got the soap, but a nasty look or words from an adult. But I am always careful around certain folks so as not to offend. A few years ago when I cooked in a hotel, I was surrounded with incompetent temporary workers, and even the poor costumers got to hear me. Luckily that situation no longer exists, and I was embarrassed by my outbursts. The occasional swear word does not bother me at all. I figure nowadays,I don't like hearing 'useless' swearing. ie. trying to sound cool sort of useless. There should be a good reason; hammer meets finger, idiot runs over toe, trying to get point across to idiot, etc......... Although apparently there has been a study done, and the studiers think people that swear occasionally actually mean what they are saying, just adding a little emphasis to get the point across. Or something like that.... Wow, life story. Sorry...Lol

At work probably every second or third word, at home, public, or around "normal" people very rarely. In front of the old man in 40 years, never! He may be 80 be I still fear him!

Audience dictates and situations.

Kids curse as much today as we did in our day.

I curse far more than my wife appreciates I am sure. I do try and moderate around little old ladies and other peoples kids but I am not always successful and find myself apologizing profusely on these ocassions. I tend to stick to the good old fashioned GD's, F bombs and Fecal related words and avoid the much maligned third letter of the alphabet female anatomy and other more "hardcore" levels of colourful contributions.

I spent two weeks over Christmas in Bolivia with the wife's family....went without a cigar, a whisky, or swearing for two whole weeks. Came home, picked up all the messages on voice mail work phone, started making calls....and the swearing came right back! Then, the whisky and a cigar. All is well with the world again I suppose.

Often - and usually in the mixed company of younger women.

Young women can swear so much better and much more effectively than grumpy anal old conservative men.

I wasn't too bad until I started in the oil patch. Now I catch myself swearing too much. Even in front of my mom some times

In my dreams, mostly.

Sure hope I'm not sleep-talking! The wife/kids would be in for a shock...

Kids learn a lot on the internet, but I don't think they need to go there to learn foul language. Long before computers were available to most, I knew classmates whose every second word was the f-word.

I've got lots of respect for people who never swear. I think most people swear once in a while, where it at least fits as an explicative. You hit your thumb with a hammer, are suddenly surprised or angered, etc. It's a release. And heck, it might even be healthy once in a while. But where it's more an unconscious and regular part of your vocabulary, I think it marks you as uneducated, uncouth, a dullard, IMHO at least.

There are rules in place on this particular forum about bypassing the swear filter and language in general, and they are far stricter than most forums I am registered with .
Bottom line is , a person does not have to swear or curse to get a point across or even converse in everyday talk.
Some people have a hard time doing that however.......

An Norman Mailer would be doubled over with laughter about this forum for banning his innocent little 1948 creation, which was, and still is, much more shocking and effective than the boring old and over used F-Word.

I don't think The owner of this forum really cares what Norman Mailer would think , and I don't either for that matter.
Those who cannot help themselves but to curse online can go elsewhere if they cannot follow a set of rules that were made to respect others.

The poll is incomplete, it doesn't include an option for those afflicted with 'driving Tourette's'.
